CAA Winter Festival of Lights in Winter 2011/2012

On December 30, my family headed down to Niagara Falls to view the lights in Queen Victoria Park. The CAA Winter Festival of Lights doesn’t seem to change much year to year, but it still a nice sight. Almost anything looks good lit up at night.

I took some pictures as we walked around. Not all of them are of the CAA Winter Festival of Lights, but they were all taken on the same night so I’ve put them in the same gallery. You can see a few thumbnails below, or you can see the entire gallery (15 images) in the CAA Winter Festival of Lights in Winter 2011/2012 image gallery.

IN CONVERSATION WITH: Dino Fazio

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It’s a Wednesday afternoon a few days before Christmas and the last thing Dino Fazio wants to see is weather like this.

As winter begins, rain is pouring onto the outdoor skating rink built near the Table Rock building.

After seven years of heading up the Winter Festival of Lights, the 40-year-old Fazio knows weather is one of those elements he just has to roll with.

“When you’re involved in outdoor events, the one thing you can’t control is the weather. You’re always worried about it,” he said.

Niagara Falls Attraction TD RINK at the Brink Prepares to Open for Third Season

From a PR Web press release:

One of the cornerstones of the Niagara-in-winter experience – the TD RINK at the Brink – opens to the public for its third season on Thursday, December 1.

The TD RINK – Niagara’s answer to the iconic outdoor ice skating rinks at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and Rockefeller Centre in New York City – is located just a snowball’s throw from the brink of the world-famous Horseshoe Falls.

The signature Niagara Falls attraction of the CAA Winter Festival of Lights, the TD RINK offers public skating, skate and locker rentals and free helmets for those who need them, as well as a skate sharpening service and group rates for holiday outings, parties, school trips and corporate team-building exercises. RINK adds yet another unique and fun family experience to the CAA Winter Festival of Lights, which is already one of the most iconic festivals in Ontario.

TD, the title sponsor of the TD RINK, has generously agreed to provide six ‘TD Free Skate Days’. ‘TD Free Skate Days’ allow members of the public to experience the TD RINK at the Brink complements of TD. Additionally, the TD Comfort Crew will be in attendance at each ‘TD Free Skate Day’ providing complementary hot chocolate and a souvenir photo.

NPC says it followed the rules for carousel deal

From the Niagara Falls Review:

They won’t say how much it cost for the six-week rental of a carousel ride, but the Niagara Parks Commission says the proper bidding process was followed.

The Victorian Candy Lane carousel opened Saturday at Queen Victoria Place and the NPC says more than 700 rides were taken on the weekend — some at $3 each and some (for riders under five years old) were free.

Allegations about a lack of tenders have dogged the NPC in the past, but interim chairwoman Janice Thomson says things have changed.

Asked about the tendering process for the carousel, which will be part of the Winter Festival of Lights until Jan. 8, Thomson said, “We have a procurement policy and everything in the park should be procured through the process. We have management in place that is very strictly adhering to policy.”

Festival of Lights turns up the wattage with new sports events

From the Niagara Falls Review:

With its 30th anniversary looming next year, the CAA Winter Festival of Lights is adding more juice to its lineup.

Sponsored by beverage maker Cintron, a new three-day sports festival will take place throughout the city to conclude this year’s event. It’s expected to attract about 1,300 athletes in a variety of sports, along with 2,600 spectators during tourism’s chilly off-season.

Festival of Lights general manager Dino Fazio looks at it as a “mini-Olympics,” with potential for major competitions and TV coverage down the road.

“Curling, gymnastics, basketball, girls and boys hockey, you name it — if anybody wants to be part of it, they will be,” said Fazio. “The sky’s the limits in terms of the number of sports we could add, the number of age groups we could add.

“The beauty about this event is that it can include provincial and national championships.”

Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor announced $81,400 in funding for the sports festival over the next 24 months through the province’s Trillium Foundation. The money will be used to hire an events manager.

Setting up for Winter Festival of Lights 2011/2012

Over the last couple of days the workers have been out in Queen Victoria Park setting up some of the displays for the Niagara Falls CAA Winter Festival of Lights. On the one hand, it seems a bit early. On the other hand, it is much better for the workers to be out in this weather, then cold/bitter weather in November/December. The festival opens on November 7th, so they have just over a month to setup.

From the Toronto Star:

Okay, you’re up and moving gingerly on the new skates Santa brought, but can you stop?

That question may arise in your mind this winter as you glide toward the brink of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls.

The Rink at the Brink returned last month, but skaters this year are getting a true sense that they are skating near the edge of the roaring falls.
