Maid of the Mist Captain retires after 36 years

From the Niagara Falls Review:

His first time out, Malcolm Bunting kept thinking that it goes against all common sense and seamanship to go toward a waterfall of that size.

He did it anyway.

That was 36 years ago.

The giant waterfall was the Horseshoe Falls and his job was with the Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company.

“I had never carried passengers before and I kept thinking, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing here.’ Over the years you get used to it and it becomes routine,” said Cpt. Bunting.

The 63-year-old retired Wednesday night after making his final trip.

10 most beautiful waterfalls

From Today Travel:

Few things in nature are as mesmerizing as a waterfall — the thunderous roar as water spills over cliffs, the light glistening off the spray, the sheer force of it all. We found the 10 most enticing cascades on the planet. Some are obvious choices (who could resist the honeymooners’ classic Niagara?), others are more obscure (ever heard of Langfoss?), but they all share an important quality: One look, and you’re bound to be transfixed for hours.

The awesome power of Niagara Falls (photos)

From CNet News:

Even if you’ve never been here, you almost certainly can recognize Niagara Falls with just a glance. At once massive, majestic, awe-inspiring, and thunderously loud–not to mention the “wettest place on Earth”–this famous waterfall is also one of the largest power generators on the planet.

As part of Road Trip 2010, CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman crossed the Rainbow Bridge and took in the falls from the Canadian side. What he saw, and what millions of others see every year, is truly one of Earth’s most impressive natural features and among the most productive.

Some observations about the new Niagara Falls Margaritaville

As I tweeted last week, I stopped by the new Niagara Falls location of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. I walked all through the restaurant to check it out. I haven’t eaten there yet, but here are some observations:

  • They did a very nice job fixing up that building.
  • It has a definite “” theme to it. The decorations, wall coverings, and sets all definitely give you a “vacation” feel.
  • The stage is smaller than I thought, but still looks like it has everything they need.
  • I’ve been told that there are 3 bands playing each day.
  • When I was by, there were two guys out on one of the patios playing, with one of them playing a . I love that sound!
  • There are 4 patios of various sizes.
  • I saw a girl on making balloon shapes for people.
  • The extension of the building that was put on the Fallsview Blvd side is their gift shop.
  • There is a nice projector system that shows a very large
  • I’ve been told that their hamburger meal is around $13, where competitors (Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood) is closer to $16

Overall, I’m very, very impressed. It seems to be a much better fit that the Wolfgang Puck restaurant.

As of now, the only negative thing I’d say, is that you can’t see inside the restaurant at all from the outside. That seems like a shame. You can’t really see at all how cool it is until you walk in. That seems to be a mistake as they miss quite a bit of walking traffic if people aren’t familiar with the restaurant chain.

I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to go and eat there, but I’m looking forward to it.
