Auction of former Hotel Niagara goes to Vancouver bidder for $1.25 million

From the Buffalo News:

A 30-year-old Vancouver man placed the winning $1.25 million bid for the former Hotel Niagara at an auction Tuesday.

Jamil Kara said he plans to turn the 12-story building at Rainbow Boulevard and First Street downtown into a boutique hotel and condominiums.

Kara, who was one of 10 qualified bidders, said that he has been in the condo and hotel business for about seven years and that his development group owns several high-rises in the British Columbia city.

He said he also was involved in the Film Work Lofts, a recently completed project in Hamilton, Ont.

Montgomery shares gold with Niagara

From Niagara This Week:

The premier of Niagara IMAX Theatre’s latest movie had a touch of gold to it on Thursday night.

Skeleton athlete Jon Montgomery, hot off capturing a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, was happy to pose for photos and sign autographs for the never-ending line of fans for two straight hours before viewing Extreme, a film exploring the lives of extreme athletes and the forces of nature they tackle.

Note: We had a great time that night. I’ve been waiting to post about it until the IMAX sends me the picture they took (you couldn’t take your own picture with him… they had a number system and took a good photo for you). It’s been two weeks now, and they still haven’t sent it…

Power of thought to control Niagara Falls lightshow

From TGDaily.com:

Visitors to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next week will be able to control lightshows at major landmarks by the power of thought alone.

Toronto-based InteraXon has invented a headset that picks up the user’s alpha and beta waves and translates them into commands.

“We’re like interpreters fluent in the language of the mind: our system analyses the frequency of your brainwaves and then translates them into a control signal for the computer to understand,” says the company.

The system will be used to control lightshows at Toronto’s CN Tower, Ottawa’s Parliament buildings and Niagara Falls.
