Chan rallies NPC staff

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The public has “high expectations” of the Niagara Parks Commission and its employees want to live up to them, Ontario Minister Tourism Michael Chan said in a visit to Niagara Falls Friday intended to rally the employees of the beleaguered government agency.

“They want to do their job. They want to do it right. They want to do it good,” Chan said in an interview after a reception with more than 200 employees of the government agency responsible for the public land along the Niagara River.

The Liberal cabinet minister said it’s his “style” to meet the people who work for the agency that fall under his watch.

He hinted Friday at the “many challenges” the agency has faced.

Niagara not just a day trip

Niagara Falls may be one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, but many visitors, even those from this country, just want to take a fast look at the water, buy some icewine, and head down the QEW to Toronto. And that’s a serious problem, says Niagara Parks Commission Chairwoman Fay Booker. “We have to [...]

Mickey set to flip the switch

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The leaves have fallen, the pumpkins are gone and the Christmas decorations are out of storage.

But around Niagara Falls, the season doesn’t formally start until Mickey Mouse says so.

The Disney icon will once again flip the switch Saturday night at Queen Victoria Park to get the 28th CAA Winter Festival of Lights underway. In a flash, more than 125 displays and three million lights will dazzle the city, making it one of North America’s largest lights festivals.

“It kind of officially turns the city into winter mode,” says festival general manager Dino Fazio. “It certainly drives a lot of overnight tourism (this weekend) … that’s when we start to see people showing up.

“They’ll come on a regular basis. There are those that come now but also want to see (the lights) when the snow falls as well.”

Hart & Huntington Grand Opening Comes To The Falls This Weekend

From View magazine:

While Niagara Falls has a handful of tattoo shops in and around Clifton Hill, it won’t be until Saturday that the world’s leading tattoo brand, nearly a genre in itself comes to the area. Founded by motocross legend Carey Hart, the athlete turned entrepreneur is bringing his chain of highly successful quality tattoo shops to the tourist–friendly zone. While this marks the first Canadian shop under the Hart & Huntington banner it wasn’t until many visits to the Falls and lots of research later that Hart decided that there is no better place for the Canadian flagship shop.

“I did a lot of looking around and at the end of the day we had a lot of potential places but it just made sense for a lot of our clientele that we got from either the television show or the motocross scene that our shops are usually always based around tourism. A lot of things went into play when we picked Niagara Falls (and) after visiting a couple of times, I really enjoyed it,” said Hart. “Plus, it reminded me of Vegas in the type of environment it has and vibe. Canada has always been so supportive.”

Falls will feel HST pinch: PC critic

From Niagara This Week:

Dalton McGuinty will have his hands in honeymooners’ pockets with the introduction of the harmonized sales tax, according to the Progressive Conservative party’s tourism critic.
, MPP for Wellington-Halton Hills, was in Niagara Falls Tuesday to talk tourism. Speaking to a group of residents and tourists at the bottom of Clifton Hill, he outlined some possible effects the new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) could have on tourism in the honeymoon capital.
“It (the HST) is going to impact negatively on tourism,” said Arnott.

Improving tourist signs in city becomes priority

From the Buffalo News:

The generations- old debate over the best use of street signs to direct tourists to local attractions may be nearing a settlement — but not quite yet.

City Council Chairman Sam Fruscione and Mayor Paul A. Dyster said they plan to discuss the issue during a private meeting today, and the mayor said the present street-direction signs “leave a lot to be desired, especially in the downtown area.”

Members of the Tourism Advisory Board, which makes recommendations to the City Council, agreed by consensus Monday that too many signs direct tourists toward the Rainbow Bridge to Canada instead of toward Niagara Falls State Park, Goat Island and local attractions. Fruscione said he would take the advisory board’s concerns to the mayor today.

Falls important for Ontario tourism: Minister

From the Niagara Falls Review:

As Michael Chan met with several of Niagara’s tourism officials this week, he said one thing became abundantly clear.

“I think the Niagara region is in a really good position moving forward. I’m very hopeful for the future of tourism in the area,” Ontario’s tourism minister told The Niagara Falls Review during his day-long tour of the peninsula Wednesday.

While mayors, economic development officers and others with a stake in the local industry continue to raise concerns about the economy, currency exchange fluctuations and border-related challenges, bright lights can be seen on the horizon, Chan said.

Construction of the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre in Niagara Falls, a motor speedway proposal in Fort Erie and the formation of a regional tourism organization will put the area in good stead come the future, he said.

Bad news for tourism

From the Niagara Falls Review:

American pastures are looking a lot greener for Canadian shoppers after the loonie opened trading Wednesday at par with the U.S. dollar.

While parity may be nothing more than a psychological milestone, the northward march of the Canadian dollar against the greenback could see more people and jobs heading south.

And that’s bad news for the hospitality industry — the city’s economic backbone.

“We’re Legal in Niagara Falls!”

I guess this is the sort of thing that CNN iReport is looking for

…So…the day after our wedding, we hopped in the car and headed to Niagara Falls!

This warm and welcoming city provided much fun and tourism for the first couple days of our honeymoon, and on the third day we made a phone call and hired a lovely woman to perform our second ceremony. It was short, sweet, and it was legal! We both cried, and enjoyed the equality that we long for so much at home. We spent the next week enjoying the fun of Clifton Hill, and the beauty of Niagara-On-The-Lake, taking in some of the amazing sights and experiences that the area had to offer.

Laura and I will never forget Niagara Falls…
