Falls Incline Railway slated for overhaul
From the Niagara Falls Review:
It’s time to stop the decline of the incline.
The Niagara Parks Commission has plans to replace its aging Falls Incline Railway that makes it easier for visitors to go from the Fallsview tourism district down into the park.
The upgrade is the next phase of its Table Rock Redevelopment Project and is intended to enhance the overall guest experience of Niagara.
The announcement was made Friday near the Table Rock Clock Tower close to the incline by Janice Thomson, interim chair of the NPC, and Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Tourism and Culture.
The projected opening date is March 2013.

Falls a tourism anchor for Niagara: Diodati
From Niagara This Week:
In Jim Diodati’s eyes, Niagara Falls is a piece of bait.
He says the city, with its beautiful natural wonder and tourist appeal, is what draws people to the Niagara region to visit. The plan, he added, is to use that bait to hook visitors and get them to explore more of what Niagara has to offer.

36 Hours in Niagara Falls
From the New York Times:
At Niagara Falls, the United States is the poor relation and Canada is king. Nature gave Canada the wide-angle view of the majestic waterfall that straddles the border between the two countries, and the Canadians’ commercial bet on tourism landed most of the visitor comforts on their side of the Niagara River. American reliance on industry, however, ended in Rust Belt ruin. Yet the story isn’t so simple. Casinos, high-rise hotels and hucksterish come-ons have so proliferated in Niagara Falls, Ontario, that it risks feeling like a tired amusement park. Meanwhile, in Niagara Falls, New York, the visitor who ventures inside the shabby, underfinanced state park is surprised to discover vestiges of something like a natural landscape. The party is in Canada. The real feel of the river, in all its awesome power, is more accessible in the United States. Hop back and forth to get the best of both Niagaras and see for yourself.

Tourism from US to Canada down 8.9%
Arrivals to Canada fell 4.1% as compared to 2010. The most notable decline was visitors from the US (down 8.9%) and Germany (down 26%).Opening set N.F., Ont. convention center
From Buffalo Business First:
Just a few days before the grand opening of the Scotiabank Convention Centre, Kerry Painter is able to finally get rid of her hard hat and steel-toed shoes as she walks around the building.
The 288,000-square-foot Niagara Falls, Ont. convention center is that close to opening.
Crews inside and outside the Stanley Avenue facility are spending the final days before the center’s official debut Friday afternoon focusing less on bricks-and-mortar issues and more on putting the final touches on the $100 million building that many believe will be a critical piece of Niagara Falls’ tourism and hospitality business.

Family Day ‘spectacular’ for tourism
From the Niagara Falls Review:
It was designated as a day for family time.
Perhaps more importantly, Family Day was needed to bridge the long holiday gap between New Year’s Day and Easter.
No matter what the reason, a three-day weekend in February is a gift Niagara Falls will gladly accept. After all, according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s website, “there is good reason to believe a mid-winter holiday may spark an increase in industries such as tourism and entertainment, leisure.”

Sizing up the job ‘opportunities’
From the Niagara Falls Review:
There were about 40 businesses to choose from, but Tulliana Duiker had her heart set on three of them.
“I’m actually looking at the convention centre, Marriott and the jet boat tours,” said the 19-year-old Niagara College student.
“They’re all different, so I just want to see what I can get into.”
Duiker was one of hundreds of Niagara College students who attended the annual Careers in Hospitality job fair at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus Thursday.
More than 40 tourism-related employers from across Canada set up booths and invited the college’s 1,500 students from the hospitality program to apply for various jobs.

Chan rallies NPC staff
From the Niagara Falls Review:
The public has “high expectations” of the Niagara Parks Commission and its employees want to live up to them, Ontario Minister Tourism Michael Chan said in a visit to Niagara Falls Friday intended to rally the employees of the beleaguered government agency.
“They want to do their job. They want to do it right. They want to do it good,” Chan said in an interview after a reception with more than 200 employees of the government agency responsible for the public land along the Niagara River.
The Liberal cabinet minister said it’s his “style” to meet the people who work for the agency that fall under his watch.
He hinted Friday at the “many challenges” the agency has faced.
