Ice bridge takes shape under falls
From the Tonawanda News:
In the wake of bone-chilling temperatures over the past couple of weeks, Niagara’s top off-season attraction has formed below the falls.
The ice bridge, as it is known, was spotted Friday morning by Emil Bende, general manager of marine operations at the Canadian Maid of the Mist landing.
“It (the ice) was struggling to take shape the last few days,” Bende said, adding that even after it formed, some openings occurred a short time later.
“But now it’s solid, shore to shore,” he said, viewing the mid-afternoon scene.
I wonder if this is still true with the weather we’ve

Recalling ‘Niagara Miracle’ 50 years later
From the Tonawanda News:
Roger Woodward still remembers how bored and lonely he was that day, July 9, 1960, until a family friend invited him for a boat ride on the upper Niagara River.
Seven years old then, he didn’t even know where he was going, but he was sure it would be a good time.
Roger’s sister, Deanne, was celebrating her 17th birthday and James Honeycutt, 42, a family friend, thought the Woodward children would enjoy an outing in his 12-foot aluminum boat with the 71?2 horsepower motor.
It would be a tension-filled day they’d never forget.

Greetings from Niagara Falls
From the Tonawanda News:
This is, by far, the shortest distance I have ever trekked to do a travel story.
Yet even though the Ontario portion of the cataract is only about 70 blocks from where I live, it is pretty much another world.
Not to knock the natural beauty of the U.S. side of the falls, but from the States, Canada’s side looks more … well … fun. All those bright lights and tall, shiny buildings just call to onlookers.
So in that spirit, the first installment in the News’ new travel series will take a look at Niagara Falls, Ontario, from a tourist’s point of view. Trying to simulate a family’s budget, we capped ourselves at $80 for the day. So no, that meant that we couldn’t go to the casino.

Maid of the Mist under siege
From the Tonawanda News:
An Atlanta businessman with eyes on the boat tour operation in Niagara Falls has filed a lawsuit in Albany in an effort to force state officials to allow his company to compete against the Maid of the Mist Corp.
William Windsor, whose son owns a tour-ticket company known as Alcatraz Media, announced on Wednesday he has taken legal action against New York State Parks, the Office of the state Comptroller, the attorney general, Gov. David Paterson, former state parks commissioner Ed Rutkowski and Maid of the Mist officials James and Christopher Glynn in an attempt to void the state’s boat service license with Maid of the Mist which has been offering trips on the river below Niagara Falls since 1846.
