Last week I posted about how the 7-Eleven at the corner of Stanley Ave and Ferry St had closed. I said I didn’t know what was going to be there. Well, commenter Adam White was right. it is going to be a Mac’s

Progress on new Wyndham hotel (former Fallsview Inn)
The work sure seems to be coming along nicely where the Stanley Motor Inn and Fallsview Inn used to be. It is now going to be a Wyndham hotel.

Comes with Color T.V.!!!
I’ve walked by this sign at the Stanley Motor Inn hundreds of times, but the other day I saw this and it made me laugh out loud. I always thought it was an old-school sign, but the other daying seeeing that they highlighted the Color T.V. just seemed particularly funny. Could you imagine going to any hotel anywhere these days that still had black and white TVs? Many people expect big flat screen TVs now, and are disappointed with 27″ picture tube TVs.

Scotiabank Convention Centre big hit with visitors
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Pretty impressive.
That’s what most people were saying on the weekend after getting their first opportunity to tour the new $100-million Scotiabank Convention Centre on Stanley Ave., near Dunn St., in Niagara Falls.
The biggest headache for most drivers was getting stuck in long lines of traffic just making their way to the centre, and then trying to find a parking spot.
On Saturday afternoon, there were times when cars were backed up on Stanley Ave., all the way to Ferry St., and it wasn’t much better for those coming from the south end at McLeod Rd.

More houses torn down at Stanley Ave/Robinson St
Over the last few years there have been several houses torn down at the corner of Stanley Ave and Robinson St. They have been unoccupied for a while, and were an eyesore. I’m not positive how many were torn down the other day, but I think it was 2.

Construction at Fallsview Inn on Stanley Avenue
Back in July http://twitpic.com/223lpeI posted a picture of a notice of a sign outside the Fallsview Inn on Stanley Avenue. There was a proposal for a 9-storey hotel. Well, reading this sign would have made me think that there was a new 9-storey hotel being build. Actually, it appears to just be an addition.

Big projects, big impact
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Some of the city’s biggest and long-awaited building projects will either be completed or closer to completion in 2011.
The Scotiabank Convention Centre, currently under construction about 500 yards from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls on Stanley Ave., is scheduled to host its first event — a home and garden show — April 8, 9 and 10.
The 288,000-square-foot facility will feature an 82,000-square-f oot exhibition hall, a 17,000-square-foot ballroom, an intimate 1,000-square-foot seat theatre and 26,500-square-feet of meeting space.
Officials expect the centre to have a major impact on tourism and broader economic benefits for the region.

GooEe’s Oriental Grill House in Summer 2010
About a month ago I went with a friend of mine to GooEe’s Oriental Grill House on Stanley Ave for lunch. I had previously been in contact Joann Son, the General Manager of the restaurant and let her know that we were coming. I invited this particular friend to go with me because he lived and worked in Korea for several years and speaks fluent Korean. I wanted his opinion on how authentic the experience was.
Joann works at the restaurant and her fiancé is the chef. They’ve wanted to open a restaurant for a while, and finally opened GooEe’s in November. The word gooee is roughly translated to mean “roasted”. Joann has never worked at a restaurant before, but you would never know as the service she provided was excellent.
They have done a nice job with the building. It was formerly a Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall. They did some extensive renovations (including putting in windows) and have the main floor setup for the restaurant. The decor was exactly what you would expect if you had walked into a restaurant in Seoul, from the artsy glossy photos on the walls, down to the very mellow instrumental music (called GyoungOoMak in Korean). The downstairs might be used in the future for banquets.
The presentation of the meal was neat and orderly, and most importantly, the food was good. We had Korean Chili Pork. The flavors were as close a blend to what my friend had experienced while living in Korea and he liked the fact that they did not tone it down for us. It was pretty spicy! The only disappointment that my friend had was that the rice was not Korean style. Apparently they had tried it, but the customers didn’t like it, so they switched to a different style of rice that the customers liked more.
As someone who was going to a Korean restaurant for the first time, I couldn’t comment on how authentic things were, but I can say that the restaurant was clean, the service was excellent, and the food was very good. The lunch was reasonably priced and the portions were very generous. My friend can see it becoming very popular with the local Koreans. He thought it was the best Korean experience in the Niagara region. We’d both recommend it!
I took a few pictures with my cell phone while we were there. You can see the thumbnails below, or the full version in the GooEe’s Oriental Grill House in Summer 2010 gallery.
