Rink at the Brink has Competition

Construction of an ice rink DeVeaux Woods State Park, just a little further from the falls, just finished. Because the rink is far enough from the falls there is no need for a roof and enclosure. Hopefully skating at the rink becomes an annual tradition for residences and visitors to Niagara Falls.

Rink at the Brink measures up

From the Niagara Falls Review:

After writing half a dozen news stories about the $750,000 rink, it was time to see firsthand if the new ice is all it’s cracked up to be. (Check out the video tour of the rink on The Review’s website). Having grown up near Ottawa’s famous Rideau Canal, the world’s longest outdoor rink, it’s hard to impress this skating snob.

But the ice is pretty smooth, especially since the temporary rink was built in a field. It feels a little softer than ice at an indoor municipal arena, maybe because Mother Nature hasn’t been co-operative about making ice. Conditions will probably improve the colder it gets and the more times it’s flooded.

The first question most people have is “can you really see the falls?”

Lace up with Lord Stanley’s Mug

From Niagara This Week:

The Stanley Cup is coming to Niagara Falls.

A slogan for the event being passed around the city is “two icons, one location.”

The Hockey Hall of Fame put together a package specifically for the 27th year of the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights at the Rink on the Brink on Saturday, Dec. 19 for families to attend.

Rink on the Brink is an outdoor skating rink (18-by-36 metres) located next to the Table Rock on the Niagara Parkway right across from the Falls.

“We’re trying to encourage all of the youth in local sports, boys or girls, whether it’s travel or house league, or even sports enthusiasts to come down and participate in leisure skating, enjoy the memorabilia and get your photograph taken with the Cup,” said Rick Morocco, the manager of sponsorship and sales of WFOL.

A few “Rink at the Brink” pictures

On Saturday I walked down to the “Rink at the Brink” to take a few pictures. It was around 1 pm, and there were about 15 people skating. I had read the article in the Review about the fences, and they’re right! It is very difficult to actually get in.

This first picture shows the fences, and that they run along the road separating the rink from the public. It also shows all of the empty land that people have to walk across in order to get to the rink.

This picture shows the side of the rink, with the “windows”. Apparently they open/roll them up sometimes.

Parks commission has learned a thing or two from Clifton Hill

From the Niagara Falls Review:

If you’re checking out the new Rink at the Brink this weekend, you’ll have no trouble finding it. The Niagara Parks Commission’s new fence running the length of its Table Rock parking lot makes it impossible to miss it.

It turns visitors to the falls into cattle, herding them from the parking lot right into the gift shop of the new Niagara’s Fury attraction -and now, to the temporary rink area.

For locals who don’t regularly go into Queen Victoria Park, a visit to the new Winter Festival of Lights skating rink will be their introduction to the parks commission’s black, iron monster.

The new fence runs along the west side of the Niagara Parkway, from the Canadian Niagara Power building north to the new clock tower and walkway addition to the Table Rock building.

You don’t need an MBA in marketing to see what’s going on here. The parks commission appears to be funnelling everybody who parks in its lot right into its own ticket sales counter, gift shop and restaurants.

Rink ready to rock

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It won’t take long for the city’s newest ice rink to heat up.

A three-month battle of the bands competition starts next Thursday at Rink at the Brink, the new outdoor facility that opened near Table Rock Wednesday.

Rock the Ice Nights will run every Thursday until a champion is crowned Feb. 25, with several career-aiding prizes at stake.

“We went to all the schools in Niagara asking the kids, ‘What do you want to do? What would you like to see down at the Rink at the Brink?’” says Tina Myers, assistant manager of events with the Winter Festival of Lights. “The consensus was live music, food and prizes. So, that’s what we’re trying to do.”

The ice is nice: Rink at the Brink is ready for skaters

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The unmistakable sound of winter in Canada -metal cutting into ice -will blend with the roar of Niagara Falls when the Rink at the Brink opens today.

After two weeks of getting it ready, the Winter Festival of Lights attraction will open on Niagara Parks Commission land, creating a new winter attraction festival officials say they hope catches on like skating in New York’s Central Park or in front of Rockefeller Center.

Outdoor skating rink to open Nov. 23 at ‘brink’ of Horseshoe Falls

From a Canadian Press article found at Yahoo! Canada News:

A new public skating rink will open next month “a stone’s throw from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls,” say organizers of the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights.

The outdoor Rink at the Brink, two-thirds the size of an NHL rink, will be located across from the newly renovated Table Rock Centre and offer excellent views of the Falls, says a release.

It will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. from Nov. 23 to Feb. 28. Skates and helmets will be available for rent, and skating lessons will also be offered.

Admission without skate rental is $8 for adults, $5.75 for children.

“We think it’s going to be a huge hit with both local residents and visitors to Niagara Falls,” said festival chair Joe Miszk.
