Niagara Falls Attraction TD RINK at the Brink Prepares to Open for Third Season

One of the cornerstones of the Niagara-in-winter experience – the TD RINK at the Brink – opens to the public for its third season on Thursday, December 1.
The TD RINK – Niagara’s answer to the iconic outdoor ice skating rinks at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and Rockefeller Centre in New York City – is located just a snowball’s throw from the brink of the world-famous Horseshoe Falls.
The signature Niagara Falls attraction of the CAA Winter Festival of Lights, the TD RINK offers public skating, skate and locker rentals and free helmets for those who need them, as well as a skate sharpening service and group rates for holiday outings, parties, school trips and corporate team-building exercises. RINK adds yet another unique and fun family experience to the CAA Winter Festival of Lights, which is already one of the most iconic festivals in Ontario.
TD, the title sponsor of the TD RINK, has generously agreed to provide six ‘TD Free Skate Days’. ‘TD Free Skate Days’ allow members of the public to experience the TD RINK at the Brink complements of TD. Additionally, the TD Comfort Crew will be in attendance at each ‘TD Free Skate Day’ providing complementary hot chocolate and a souvenir photo.

CAA Winter Niagara Festival of Lights & Winter Events Illuminate Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls welcomes the winter season with Canada’s largest illumination festival, the CAA Winter Niagara Festival of Lights. Running until January 31, 2011, the Niagara festival captures the magic of the holiday season turning Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland with over three million sparkling lights along a 5 km route. Rink at the Brink gets go ahead to promote partnership with TD

Rink at the Brink will be allowed to promote its financial sponsorship with Toronto Dominion bank when the outdoor ice surface near the Horseshoe Falls opens next week.
During a special meeting Friday morning, Niagara Parks commissioners approved a request from the Winter Festival of Lights for permission to erect temporary signs bearing the TD/Rink at the Brink logo.
During a meeting earlier in the week, some commissioners expressed concerns about setting a precedent by allowing third-party corporate signs on NPC property for an extended period of time.

Signage could be a kink for Rink at the Brink

Niagara Parks commissioners may be about to throw a kink in plans for the Rink at the Brink.
On Monday, commissioners voiced their concerns about a request from the Winter Festival of Lights to erect signs and banners near the outdoor rink near Table Rock promoting the Toronto Dominion bank as this year’s title sponsor.
With less than two weeks until opening day, commissioners, who expressed concerns about setting a precedent opening the NPC up to criticism, put the request on hold pending receipt of additional information from parks staff .

Rink at the Brink to Return for 2010-2011 Season
As previously announced, the Rink at the Brink will be back on Niagara Parks Commission land this year. The official press release is available here:
Thousands of visitors to Niagara Falls will once again be able to experience the thrill of skating just steps from the Horseshoe Falls, thanks to the decision taken today by The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) Board.
During its regularly scheduled Commission meeting, the NPC Board voted to rescind their August decision to terminate the agreement between Niagara Parks and Winter Festival of Lights (WFOL) organizers concerning the operation of the Festival’s iconic Rink at the Brink ice skating attraction near Table Rock Complex.
Ongoing meetings among staff members at both organizations have allayed concerns expressed by NPC and have resulted in plans and commitments to alleviate operational concerns and expedite future on-site rehabilitation once the skating season is complete.

The Rink at the Brink could get a new lease on life Tuesday after the Niagara Parks Commission threatened to kill the attraction after logistical problems in its first year.
Commissioners are expected to vote during Tuesday’s board meeting on a report that would allow the Winter Festival of Lights to run the outdoor skating rink near the Horseshoe Falls again, but impose some new conditions about clean up at the end of the season.

The Rink at the Brink might see another winter after Niagara Parks Commission and Winter Festival of Lights officials smoothed over some of the commission’s concerns about the fledgling tourist attraction’s first season.
“We are cautiously optimistic the parks commission board will approve the rink operating within the parks’ land this year as they did last year,” said Winter Festival of Lights manager Dino Fazio after a lunch meeting with parks chairwoman Fay Booker and vice-chairwoman Janice Thomson.
They got together Tuesday because the parks commission in August put the festival on notice it might not renew the lease it gave the festival last year to run a temporary, open-air skating rink near the Horseshoe Falls.
The festival operated the rink, which is about two-thirds the size of an NHL rink, but it was assembled on parks land.
Parks commissioners were upset the rink wasn’t dismantled until July, despite festival assurances it would be gone in April.

Council guarantees loan for Winter Festival of Lights

The lights will stay on this winter after city council agreed to guarantee a $400,000 line of credit for the Winter Festival of Lights its manager said was needed to pay its outstanding bills.
The finance department staff opposed the move, saying the city shouldn’t act as a bank for community groups.
Festival manager Dino Fazio said without city support, he would have to “drastically alter the festival or certainly look at its demise.”

Cash-tight festival needs help from city

With its own finances at the brink, the Winter Festival of Lights has turned to city hall to back up its bid to get a line of credit it needs to pay the bills on the new Rink at the Brink skating attraction.
Festival manager Dino Fazio said his organization needs a $500,000 line of credit from its bank to start paying some of the bills associated with the new rink’s construction across from the Niagara Parks Commission’s Table Rock Complex last fall.
Without the city acting as a guarantor, the bank won’t give the festival the loan, Fazio said.
“I don’t need a dollar from the city. I do need a guarantee,” Fazio told members of the corporate services committee, which considers council’s financial matters.
“Will they give it to you without us?” Coun. Carolynn Ioannoni asked.
“No,” Fazio replied.
