“Harry Oakes – The Early Years” video

If you’ve been to Niagara Falls more than once, you’ve probably noticed the name Oakes on a lot of things. There is Oakes Garden Theatre, Oakes Park, and more. These are all named after Sir Harry Oakes. He was a prospector who discovered gold in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and then bought some property in Niagara Falls. At one point he swapped the parcel of land where Oakes Garden Theatre now stands with another parcel of land. The name lives on with HOCO Entertainment & Resorts (Harry Oakes COmpany).

Anyway, yesterday I came across a video that the Museum of Northern History (housed in the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau) posted to YouTube. It is only a couple of minutes long, but talks a bit about Harry Oakes’ early years. You can see the video below, or on YouTube.

Competition watered down by steady rain

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Oakville teen Jonathan Cosentino was one of the few skateboarders who got to show off his tricks at what was billed as Canada’s largest skateboarding competition in Niagara Falls over the weekend.

Steady rain Saturday turned the “Take the Cake” contest into a soggy affair and forced a competition among 15 professional skateboarders to be watered down Saturday.

West 49, a chain of stores that sell skateboard gear and apparel, sponsored the event offering $100,000 in total prize money.

It turned the stage at Oakes Garden Theatre into a temporary outdoor skatepark for the weekend.

West 49 Take The Cake in Niagara Falls

I don’t know where I’ve been for the last few months, but I’m just hearing about this now (even though the earliest reference I can see about this is back in May). West 49 has an event called Take the Cake that will take place at the beginning of October:

To mark 15 years as Canada’s largest retail skateboard shop, West 49 is celebrating in a big way. West 49 Take The Cake skateboard contest will take place in Niagara Falls, Ontario in October 2010.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, West 49 Take The Cake will erupt Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls featuring 10 of the worlds most influential and recognizable pro skaters throwing down their best tricks for a $100,000.00 CASH prize. Canada’s largest Cash purse event in Canada.

Attending skaters will be Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Chaz Ortiz, Torey Pudwill, Sierra Fellers, Corey Duffel, Darrell Stanton, Alex Olson, Chima Ferguson, Brandon Westgate, Shuriken Shannon, Matt Miller, Paul Trep, Grant Patterson and Tom Asta. I’m not familiar with these names (it’s not really my crowd), but a quick search shows that some of these people are quite famous.

It looks like it will cost $40 to attend.

UPDATE: @NiagaraParksPR let me know that there will be general admission tickets available for $10 and a weekend pass will be $15.

The King dethroned

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The King was here, but his followers missed the memo.

The first annual Niagara Falls Elvis Festival was marred by slim crowds and some angry vendors over the weekend.

Most wondered why the event wasn’t promoted more, and felt sorry for the top notch entertainers gathered at Oakes Garden Theatre.

“One of the Elvis’ said (on Friday), ‘I’m not sticking around, there’s no one to sing to,’ ” said vendor Sheila Szalai, who paid nearly $600 with her husband Karl to operate a jewelry booth for the three-day event. By Saturday afternoon, they had made just two sales.

“We won’t be back.”

The sour mood hung over the venue Saturday as Elvis tribute artists played to barely 150 people by late afternoon. It was a far cry from the thousands organizers expected for the inaugural event.

“This is stupid, this place should be packed,” said Niagara Falls resident Della Meunier. “I love Elvis, and I am very disappointed for this. Fans just didn’t know it was going on.

“Why was it kept so secretive?”

Screenshots from Breakfast Television live from Niagara Falls

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to get up early to see Breakfast Television in person, and in the end I decided not to. However, I did watch about half an hour of it on TV (from around 6:40 am to 7:10 am).

It certainly did promote Niagara Falls well. At various times you could see the Falls, Oakes Garden Theatre, parts of Falls Ave, parts of Clifton Hill, Niagara SkyWheel, Niagara Helicopters, and more. There were several prizes given out, including passes for Niagara Helicopters and Maid of the Mist. There were people from Old Fort Erie, and of course the mayor, Ted Salci was there.

It might seem kind of lame, but I took some pictures of my TV showing some of the scenes. As always, you can see the thumbnails below, and the full pictures in the 20100618 Breakfast Television in Niagara Falls gallery

Breakfast Television in city

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Attention early risers: Breakfast Television wants you to fill Oakes Garden Theatre Friday morning.

The popular City-TV morning show is heading down the QEW for a three-hour live show in Niagara Falls, tapping the same scenic location used for Regis & Kathy Lee in 1996 and Regis & Kelly in 2006.

“It’ll be the first time that we’re bringing the whole show there,” says producer Kevin Forget. “We’re hitting the road throughout the summer and we wanted to make sure Niagara Falls was one of the stops.”

Elvis festival to rock Falls

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Here comes the King.

Shortly after fans mark the 33rd anniversary of his death this August, the first annual Niagara Falls Elvis Festival will leave ‘em all shook up at Oakes Garden Theatre.

The four-day bash runs Aug. 19 to 22 and will feature about 25 top-tier Elvis tribute artists. Unlike similar festivals in Collingwood and Windsor, it will be non-competitive.

“All we’re here to do is enjoy the music of Elvis Aaron Presley,” said festival general manager William Maurice, who has performed as Elvis for 40 years.
