Bringing Kimmel show to Canada to cost taxpayers
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Bringing the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show to Ontario will cost four taxpayer-funded funded tourist agencies a total of $450,000, according to the Niagara-based tourism organization involved in the effort to bring segments of the ABC late-night show to Canada.
“There is funding involved. It’s about a half a million dollars for all of the partners and our contribution was $50,000,” said Robin Garrett, the CEO of the Tourism Partnership of Niagara.
The Niagara tourism agency is funded entirely by the provincial tourism ministry, Garrett said.
With Tourism Toronto leading the effort, the four agencies are putting up the $450,000 to pay for the Kimmel show to shoot segments featuring Kimmel security guard sidekick Guillermo Diaz Rodriguez.
Guillermo, as he’s popularly known, will be reporting to back to Kimmel — who will be at his Los Angeles studio — from the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The show will also be shooting in Niagara Falls.

The head of a leading provincial tourism marketing agency has been named the first chief executive officer of a new Niagara tourism agency.
Robin Garrett, president of the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership, was appointed CEO of the Tourism Partnership of Niagara, the organization announced Monday.

Setting sail under cloud of uncertainty
From the Buffalo News:
Maid of the Mist workers Tuesday hurriedly prepared for the start of the upcoming tourist season — hoping it won’t be the last on the Canadian side for an iconic tour boat company that traces its roots back 126 years.
The Maid of the Mist Steamboat Corp. has owned exclusive rights from its Canadian docks below the falls since the company began, but Ontario’s tourism minister has ordered the lease on the Canadian side be opened to competitive bidding, in effect putting the long-term future of the company into question.
Charter boats will keep ferrying visitors between the docks at Table Rock and the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe falls, but they may belong to a different company and not be part of the small fleet called the Maid of the Mist.
“Everything is up in the air,” said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive of the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. on the U.S. side of the border. “Right now, I’m just looking forward to 2011 season and continuing to work with them.”

Tourism tug of war: Who is marketing Niagara?
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Welcome to the bumpy ride that is regional tourism.
A new body meant to co-ordinate provincial tourism funding for all of Niagara is just getting off the ground. But the fledgling Regional Tourism Organization has already stumbled into a controversy over an untendered marketing contract.
Meanwhile, the much-maligned Niagara Economic Development Corp., the regional government-funded agency that runs a separate Tourism Niagara website, is paralyzed by a political debate over its future.
When the dust settles, Niagara is supposed to have a co-operative, industry-led organization designed to cut through the clutter of competing marketing efforts and help co-ordinate an effective, regional tourism strategy.
But right now, some industry members feel “it’s hard to do our job,” said Susan Morin, community economic development manager for Venture Niagara.

Online reservation booking becomes increasingly popular
From the Buffalo News:
The online booking of tourism reservations continues to grow in popularity, according to the Niagara Tourism&Convention Corp., principal promoter of tourism in Niagara County.
Bookings through the corporation’s Web site ( www.niagara-usa.com ) in June and July amounted to twice as much revenue for local hospitality vendors as did bookings for those same months last year, said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive officer of the corporation. He said 2,547 bookings have been made so far this year through the online reservation system.

Hudak also abandoned tourism
From the Niagara Falls Review:
It’s ironic to hear Ontario Conservative Leader Tim Hudak accuse the Liberal government of “abandoning” tourism in Niagara Falls, but that’s politics.
Hudak and Conservative tourism critic Ted Arnott blasted Liberal Tourism Minster Michael Chan for not visiting Niagara Falls since he became the provincial cabinet minister responsible for the industry in January.
While Hudak met last week with business leaders from Niagara’s industry, Arnott emailed (for at least the third time) a press release saying “McGuinty Liberals abandon Niagara tourism.”
But when it comes to abandoning Niagara, Hudak seems to have a short memory. In 1995, he was part of the Mike Harris government that scrapped plans to move the entire Ministry of Tourism headquarters to Queen Street, Niagara Falls from downtown Toronto.
If the Tories had relocated the ministry office to the Honeymoon Capital from the provincial capital, every tourism minister would have visited Niagara Falls regularly to check in with the bureaucracy staff.

Niagara Falls Lures Honeymooners Again
From an EU News Network press release:
Economic woes and an episode of the TV comedy “The Office” have lured honeymooners to the U.S. and Canadian sides of Niagara Falls, experts say.
Kate Scaglione, a spokeswoman for the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation, told CNN the number of hits on the wedding section of its Web site went up 83 percent the day after Jim and Pam married on “The Office.”
Some honeymooners have said Niagara lured them because they could avoid the expense of flying. The area has a retro charm, Rebecca Dolgin of TheKnot.com, said.
The Falls have lured newlyweds since the early 19th century when Aaron Burr’s daughter spent her honeymoon there. In the 1950s and 1960s, the region billed itself as “the honeymoon capital of the world.”
