GTA casino would be ‘devastating’
From Niagara This Week:
A Toronto casino would be a gamble for the province if it moves ahead without an impact study is not completed first, Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said Monday.
Diodati was reacting to the news that the OLG plans to open a gaming facility in Toronto as a part of a plan to revamp the provincial agency’s business.
It is feared that a Toronto facility will adversely impact business at Niagara Falls’ two casinos — the Fallsview Casino Rsort and Casino Niagara.

Casino’s future will be clearer Friday
From Niagara This Week:
The future of one of Niagara’s two casinos will become clearer Friday.
The fate of Casino Niagara, which first opened its doors in 1996, will be announced at a news conference at 1 p.m. at the facility, said Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor on Tuesday.
Closing Casino Niagara was one of the 362 recommendations made in the Drummond Report released late last month. The report was commissioned by the province to look at ways it could eliminate its $16-billion deficit. The casino’s future was muddied further after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) released a report detailing its plans to revitalize the province’s gaming industry. Although Casino Niagara was not named, the report talked about consolidating underperforming facilities, including casinos and slots facilities. The report also called for the establishment of a casino in Toronto.Craitor said he has met with Finance Minister Dwight Duncan “a number of times” over not only the casinos but gaming issues in Niagara as a whole.

Maid of the Mist to return in 2012
From Niagara This Week:
The Maid of the Mist will return to the water for the 2012 season on both sides of the Niagara River Gorge the company that runs the boat tours said Tuesday.
The Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company said it would continue with the service in 2012 after talks with the Niagara Parks Commission regarding operational issues.
The boat tours that ferry visitors to the foot of the Horseshoe falls from docks on both sides of the Niagara River were in jeopardy for 2012 after the NPC awarded a 30-year-lease for the services to Hornblower Canada, the Canadian arm of San Francisco-based Hornblower Cruises and Events.
In a brief news release, Maid of the Mist said tour boats will go into the water on April 12 — three weeks ahead of last year, due to unseasonably warm temperatures and ice-free conditions on Lake Erie and the Niagara River.

Loretto development passes hurdle
From Niagara This Week:
A highrise development slated for the land along Stanley Avenue which is home to the former Loretto Academy has passed another hurdle — but not without conditions.
Council endorsed a staff recommendation to approve an application building form and zoning changes sought by backers of the project, provided they meet a series of conditions, including the province signing off on a Stage 4 Archeological Assessment of the property and completion of a microclimate study “to mitigate pedestrian level impacts on the Our Lady of Peace Chapel, located to the south of the property. As well, the proponents will need to execute a Section 37 agreement with the city for each of three buildings based on five per cent of the construction value — in this case $388,000 for streetscaping work. The proponents, as a part of the Section 37 agreement will need to include provisions to preserve and restore the Loretto Academy.
