From a CNW Group press release seen on Yahoo! Finance:

The Niagara Convention & Civic Centre (NCCC) today announced that Scotiabank has acquired the naming rights to the new facility, which will open in April 2011. The Scotiabank Convention Centre (SCC), located a mere 500 yards from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, will draw hundreds of thousands of guests to the multi-purpose facility every year for a diverse range of events and corporate functions. The Centre will be the largest event and meeting facility of its kind in Niagara Falls and the Niagara Region.

“This is an exciting new step in the evolution of the convention centre,” said Kerry Painter, President & General Manager, Scotiabank Convention Centre. “Our partnership with Scotiabank re-emphasizes the expectations and aspirations of not just the local community and the region, but also of the business sector on a national and international level. Study shows economic activity of Niagara’s Winter Festival of Lights is more than 40 times its price tag

From a press release seen on the Winter Festival of Lights web site:

A detailed study of the 2009 Winter Festival of Lights found that the 59-day Festival generated $57.3 million in economic benefits for the region, more than 40 times the event’s fiscal year expenditures of $1.3 million.

In its 42-page report, Toronto-based research firm Enigma Research Corp., concludes that the 2009 Festival received more than 1.3 million visits by 413,000 unique visitors. These visitors spent approximately $57.3 million in the region throughout the festival, including $11.6 million on hotels and accommodations. The Festival contributed $34.4 million to Niagara’s gross domestic product and supported the equivalent of 646 full-year jobs in the Niagara Region.

The report is based on 600 on-site surveys conducted between November 7, 2009, and January 4, 2010, at the Festival’s lighting displays, fireworks shows, events and entertainment venues.

Convention centre, Review’s owners form partnership

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A new partnership between the future Niagara Falls convention centre and the company that owns The Niagara Falls Review will boost the image of the city-owned facility scheduled to open next spring and add to its operating revenue, officials with both companies say.

The Niagara Convention and Civic Centre selected Sun Media, the company that owns the daily newspapers in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines and Welland, as its official media sponsor.

“It means a great deal. The NCCC coming into the Niagara region is about as exciting as it gets for the development of the region,” said Judy Bullis, senior group publisher for the Niagara Newspapers Group, a division of Sun Media.

The deal is an exclusive arrangement that will see Sun Media advertising staff sell the ads displayed inside the $100-million facility on Stanley Avenue.

Falls important for Ontario tourism: Minister

From the Niagara Falls Review:

As Michael Chan met with several of Niagara’s tourism officials this week, he said one thing became abundantly clear.

“I think the Niagara region is in a really good position moving forward. I’m very hopeful for the future of tourism in the area,” Ontario’s tourism minister told The Niagara Falls Review during his day-long tour of the peninsula Wednesday.

While mayors, economic development officers and others with a stake in the local industry continue to raise concerns about the economy, currency exchange fluctuations and border-related challenges, bright lights can be seen on the horizon, Chan said.

Construction of the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre in Niagara Falls, a motor speedway proposal in Fort Erie and the formation of a regional tourism organization will put the area in good stead come the future, he said.

This summer could be a thriller in the city

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It’s not always about what you’re selling.

Sometimes, especially in an industry like tourism, it’s how you sell it.

Take Clifton Hill as an example.

As the 2010 tourism season kicks off this long weekend, the area is preparing for new attractions, restaurants and accommodations.

“A lot of people who have come to Niagara Falls in the past have that ‘been there, done that’ attitude. But the reality is Clifton Hill and all of Niagara Falls is evolving and ever changing,” said Sue McDowell, executive director of the Victoria Centre Business Improvement Area.

“There’s so many hidden treasures and places of interest in the whole Niagara region, so it’s really important to get the word out.

“We want people to know and say ‘Oh my goodness, we haven’t been to Niagara Falls in a while and so much has changed, there’s so much more to do.’”

Fort Erie speedway clears another hurdle

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Canadian Motor Speedway proposal completed another lap toward the finish line Wednesday.

The regional planning committee supported an amendment application to its policy plan, allowing the multi-million-dollar project to move ahead through what could be an arduous approval process.

The endorsement, however, didn’t come with a blank cheque. It is subject to conditions, such as limiting the type and scale of ancillary uses on the subject land, further studies and local control over the future zoning bylaw.

The decision followed closely on the heels of Fort Erie council unanimously authorizing an amendment to its official plan Monday.

Fort Erie council endorses speedway proposal

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Fort Erie council unanimously authorized an amendment to its official plan Monday night, essentially endorsing the Canadian Motor Speedway proposal. A bylaw will go before town council next Monday night.

The issue will also need approval from Niagara Region, and must meet other requirements from the provincial government.

Close to 60 people took to the podium to voice their support or opposition to the proposal during a town council meeting last night.

Normally, council meetings are held inside town hall. But with a packed house expected for such a hot-button issue, the larger Leisureplex banquet hall was required.

Hundreds packed the venue, while 57 people registered to speak.

The meeting began at 6 p.m. and finished at 12:50 a.m.
