Nice photos of Niagara Falls in Autumn 2010

Yesterday I walked along the Niagara Parkway next to the Falls and in Queen Victoria Park. I took a bunch of pictures. It was overcast, so the sky doesn’t look great, but the colours of the leaves look good. I should have probably taken these a couple of weeks ago to get some more leaves on the trees, but I just didn’t think about it. Unfortunately, in the last couple of weeks we’ve had a lot of wind, so most of the leaves are off the trees now.

You can see some of the thumbnails below, and the full versions in the Niagara Falls in Autumn 2010 gallery.

Note: There were 3,241 images in 254 galleries/categories in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery at the time they were posted.

Festival stretched an extra three weeks

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The 28th annual CAA Winter Festival of Lights will be brighter, larger and most definitely longer.

This year’s event will stretch an extra three weeks, running Nov. 6 to Jan. 31 to accommodate holiday-weary visitors who don’t have time to visit during the Christmas rush.

In addition, the festival’s scenic route along the Niagara Parkway will now extend down to Queen St. with a new district called Santa’s Village. In addition to the 125 light displays and three million individual lights, it makes this Canada’s largest lights festival, and among the largest in North America.

Deanna Clohessy: Appreciating Buffalo through a friend’s eyes

From the Buffalo News:

…Sunday, we went to Canada to see the Falls — a new experience for Sarah. She kept saying, “I can’t believe I’m in Canada! And I’m finally going to see Niagara Falls!” As we came in on Niagara Parkway, I pointed out the mist rising. She couldn’t get her camera out fast enough. Walking down Clifton Hill, I said, “Hey, look,” and pointed down the hill. It was just a sliver of the American Falls, but I will never forget her face — like a kid on Christmas morning. And I couldn’t wait for her to see the rest. Her excitement, as it had been all weekend, was marvelously contagious…

Bad drivers Niagara-bound

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Stay off the Niagara Parkway!

Some bad drivers will be Niagara-bound when “Canada’s Worst Driver” films an episode in Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Parks Commission approved a request from Proper Television, the company that produces the show for the Discovery Channel. That company wants to use Niagara Falls as the setting for the season finale of its upcoming season.

“They’re going to take people through the city, through the park. They’re going to give them a driver’s licence test and they’re going to film it,” said Joel Noden, the parks commission’s business development director.

Bike Rally on the Parkway

From Niagara This Week:

It is said that Winston Churchill called it “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world” and on Sunday, June 20, thousands of bikers will likely share his sentiment as they cruise down the Niagara Parkway.

Between June 18 and 20 thousands of bikers will descend on Niagara Falls for the inaugural Bikers Rally, the first of its kind in the city. The event is being hosted by the Niagara Parks Commission, Niagara Parks Police and Fallsview Business Improvement Area. The main event of the weekend will be a mass bike rally down the Niagara Parkway escorted by the Niagara Parks Police.

“So many people when the great weather comes want to be out on their bikes,” said organizer Sue McDowell, executive director for the Fallsview BIA. “We want to give them a place to do it.”

Niagara welcomes biker invasion

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The last time bikers invaded Niagara Falls, tensions were high between police and Hells Angels members from across Canada.

Eight years later, the roar of Harleys won’t be quite as ominous as bikers gather for Father’s Day weekend in June. The first annual Niagara Biker Rally aims to bring motorcycle enthusiasts from across Canada to town to raise money for charity.

“It’s common knowledge that there are an awful lot doctors and lawyers and business people who enjoy riding,” says Niagara Falls Tourism board of directors president Wayne Thomson.

“Are we suggesting people wearing colours are coming here for a wild time? Absolutely not.”

After approval from the Niagara Parks Commission, the rally is scheduled for June 18 to 20. The main event is a mass biker gathering June 20 at 11 a.m. at the Rapidsview parking lot, where riders will begin a cruise along the Niagara Parkway to Queenston Heights, then back to the parking lot near Table Rock.

Behind the Butterfly Conservatory

From the Niagara Falls Review:

More than 400,000 people toured the Butterfly Conservatory last year.

Employees at the facility are used to seeing and hearing people’s positive reactions to the roughly 3,000 winged wonders around them.

But it’s unlikely many of the visitors fully understand the work and effort that goes into keeping one of Niagara Parks’ premiere attractions going.

Torch arrival should attract 3,000 spectators

From the Niagara Falls Review:

More than 3,000 supporters are expected to line the route along the Niagara River Parkway Sunday as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay arrives in Niagara Falls.

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the city is hosting a free community event starting at 5:30 p. m. near Table Rock that will include live entertainment, interactive displays and giveaways from Torch Relay sponsors, including Coca-Cola and RBC.

At approximately 7 p. m., Olympian and Niagara Falls resident Gord Singleton will carry the flame and light a 1.3-metre-high cauldron.
