Plans call for section of Robert Moses to be removed

From the Niagara Gazette:

One section of the Robert Moses Parkway will soon be no more.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, announced Monday that the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has confirmed that it will release a plan in June to remove the southern section of the controversial roadway and replace it with an at-grade road. The removal would involve all four lanes of the southern section of the roadway which runs between John B. Daly Boulevard and Niagara Falls State Park. As part of the project, it would be replaced with a two-lane road that would be designed to allow for a more pedestrian-friendly crossing and improved access to the waterfront.

ABC to televise Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk over Niagara Falls

The Associated Press had a story that was picked up by many, many outlets about ABC televising Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk. I saw this particular one on the NY Daily News web site:

ABC is turning Nik Wallenda’s attempted tightrope walk over Niagara Falls into a prime-time television event next month.

The network said Friday it will devote its entire prime-time schedule to a three-hour special on June 15 with the daredevil’s attempt. Part of the show will be an examination of the greatest stunts of all time.

There is also a longer version of the article available on some sites.

At least one affiliate won’t be showing it until Sunday afternoon.

The Niagara Gazette also has a good article about this.

Niagara Falls Tightrope Walk: Flying Wallenda To Make History

From WebProNews:

When you come from a family of famous tightrope walkers that’s 7 generations long, you tend to look for ways to go bigger and better. It looks like Nik Wallenda has found one.

This June, he intends to walk a tightrope stretched directly over the waterfall at Niagara Falls–about 1800 feet across and 200 feet from the bottom–between the U.S. and Canada. If he succeeds, he’ll be the first person ever to cross right over the waterfall.

Room rates skyrocket for Wallenda walk

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The average price of a Fallsview hotel room will double on June 15, the day Nik Wallenda walks across Niagara Falls on a tightrope, according to a survey of select hotel websites.

The Review compared the price of a standard room, with two queen-sized beds, with a view of the falls on June 15, to the price of the same room the Friday before and after the event.

The price jumps 100% from June 8 to 15 — $208 to $415 — then drops back down to an average of $248 the following Friday.

“If there’s a spectacular event coming to the city, the demand for rooms is certainly going to increase,” said Wayne Thomson, who works for the Fallsview Group, which operates some of the high-rise hotels in the Fallsview district.

“Is that shocking or unusual? No. In the summertime, rates go up substantially. It’s supply and demand. Obviously people will shop around to try and find the best rate.

“If two weeks before the event rooms are not filled, then you will see a decline (in price). Ultimately, they want to fill the rooms.”
