Niagara Falls has something for everyone

From the Toronto Sun:

The days when people visited Niagara strictly to watch 5.8 million litres of fast-flowing water cascade over the mighty Falls are gone.

Not to diminish the power and majesty of Mother Nature but, today, Niagara Falls is a year-round destination with family attractions, a thriving wine-and-dine scene, glitzy casinos and sophisticated hotels and resorts.

Many people take a “Falls” getaway several times per year. And, with a little planning help from niagarafallshotels.com — the Niagara Falls Tourism Authority — no two visits have to be the same. Here are some suggestions:

The Record on the Road: Niagara Falls

From the North Jersey Record:

We traveled to Niagara Falls for a summer getaway. We visited all the tourist attractions, but our favorite was on the Cave of the Winds on the New York side. We are pictured here at the lookout of the falls outside the cave.

You’ll find a steady stream of family fun at Niagara Falls

From Cleveland.com:

Spectacular natural beauty. Gloriously tacky man-made fun. Niagara Falls is overflowing with both.

We experienced the dual sides of the falls on a long family weekend excursion to Canada to see the holiday lights — and then some. And we loved most of it, especially our 4-year-old. So if you decide to head north for a bit of seasonal sightseeing, here are some of our favorites beyond the bright lights and big falls.

A trip to Niagara Falls is a roaring good time

From the Fort Worth Star-Telgram:

“Take off your hat!” a tour guide yelled as I clung to my pink ball cap and climbed the steps cautiously to the water-soaked platform above.

“What????”

No way could I hear him over the deafening deluge of water falling just 15 feet away.

“Take! Off! Your! Hat!”

My boyfriend, Mike, rushed over and pulled the hat from my head before the wind and water could push it to the watery abyss below.

Vanity is not an option when you’re in the belly of Bridal Veil Falls, approaching the “Hurricane Deck” — so named because the water rushing by creates tropical storm conditions.

This is the pinnacle of the popular Cave of the Winds tour, and it’s about as close as anyone gets to being on one of Niagara’s three waterfalls without going over in a barrel. It’s wet, it’s windy, it’s messy, it’s scary, and it transforms Niagara Falls from a pretty scene in paintings to the primal, living, dangerous natural wonder that it is.

It was barely 4 p.m., and this was the third time that day we’d gotten a good Niagara drenching — soaked to the bone, water up our noses, contact lenses stinging and good hair day ruined.

That was the plan.

How to rediscover Niagara Falls with your family

From the Globe and Mail:

After our umpteen day trips escorting overseas visitors to Niagara Falls, it’s hard to imagine there could be anything new to see. But this time we’re doing it differently – just us, with two kids aged 1 and 3 in tow, and for a three-day stay.

Visiting FX Ride Theatre with my son

The other night I had a father/son night with my 9-year-old son. He wanted to come down to Niagara Falls, so we went mini-putting at Galaxy Golf, played in the Great Canadian Midway, rode the FX Ride Theatre, then had dinner at Wendy’s. It was fun!

funhouse full

It had been a while since I’d been on the FX Ride Theatre. They have a short film you watch in a separate room before you go into the movie about a family of clowns. I’m sure the child clown is a young Zachary Gordon, the kid from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I checked on IMDB, but it doesn’t mention anything there. The theatre has has been showing a movie called Fun House Express: Jimmy’s Clown Chaos for quite a while now, however this time it was a little different. The movie had been edited a bit differently and had some new shots. If you haven’t seen it, you can read more about it on the SimEx-Iwerks web site and watch a trailer for the movie on YouTube or below:

Clifton Hill – “The Most Fun by the Falls!”

A photographer with a Blogger blog posted about a recent trip to Niagara Falls:

After shooting more pictures of both the American Falls and Horseshoes Falls then I would ever need but seemingly unable to stop taking “just one more” shot of the beautifully illuminated falls, I finally convinced myself that enough was enough and pointed my feet in the direction of Clifton Hill for the trek back up to my car which I had parked not too far from the base of Skylon Tower.

He took some fantastic night pictures of Clifton Hill that you should check out.

From The Shelby Star (in Cleveland County, NC):

For many years, Lindsey Albrecht has dreamed of taking her mother to Niagara Falls, but as her mom developed health problems, it seemed that the trip might not be possible.

On Wednesday, Sterling House, the retirement home where she works, decided to grant her wish. Albrecht and her mother, Linda Alexander, are now headed to Niagara Falls, and the Sterling House retirement home in Shelby hosted a surprise party to tell the happy mother and daughter the news.

Travel group experiences the wonder of Niagara Falls

From The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tennessee):

Lauderdale County Commission on Aging hosted a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto the week of June 19, with 129 folks heading north to Canada to view the awe-inspiring views of the falls.

The group enjoyed dinner atop the Skylon Tower, where the views of the falls are breathtaking. They visited the Welland Shipping Canal, Queen Victoria Park, the magnificent Casa Loma Castle and the lovely historical 19th-century Niagara-on-the-Lake, just to name a few of the exciting attractions visited. They enjoyed a refreshing ride on the “Maid of the Mist,” where everyone got a look at the falls up close. On the way home they stopped at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and shopped in Louisville, Ky., at the St. Matthews Mall.
