State Parks Commissioner Outlines Niagara Falls State Park Improvement Plans
From WKBW Channel 7 in Buffalo:
New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey on Tuesday outlined a three-part plan to ensure that Niagara Falls State Park offers a welcoming and attractive visitor experience that matches the natural beauty of the Niagara River falls and gorge.
“Governor Cuomo’s administration is fully committed to revitalizing New York’s economy, and Niagara Falls State Park is a critical part of the economic future of Western New York,” Harvey said. “The facilities at Niagara Falls State Park need to match the expectations of 8 million visitors coming from around the globe each year to see the iconic falls. State Parks staff takes great pride in the park and we will dedicate ourselves to improving and enhancing the facilities that complement the falls.”

Dedication to mark Falls park’s anniversary
From the Buffalo News:
The yearlong celebration of the 125th anniversary of Niagara Falls State Park — the oldest state park in the nation — will reach a climax on Thursday when State Parks Commissioner Carol Ash dedicates Heritage Park, a refurbished “pocket park” at Main Street and the Robert Moses Parkway, just outside the main park.
Ash will be joined by relatives of Thomas V. Welch, who was the first superintendent of the state park, for the 1:30 p. m. ceremony.
July 15, 1885, was the date on which then-Gov. David B. Hill officially opened the park to the public. Once privately owned, the park property had become a state reservation in April 1885 when Hill signed the necessary bond issue.

Falls State Park offers photo focus in highlighting ‘Beyond the Barrel’
From the Buffalo News:
It took Kenn Morgan more than six months to capture just the right shot of Niagara Falls State Park on film.
Morgan, a Buffalo resident, and seven other still-film camera buffs set out in the fall to find unique images of the country’s oldest state park.
“The idea when we started the project was to photograph Niagara Falls not looking like any postcard shots or your typical tourist shots or what we call ‘pedestrian shots,’ ” said Morgan, founding member of the Still Film and Camera Photographers of Greater Buffalo. “We wanted to dig a little deeper.”
The result was 40 black-and-white prints of Niagara Falls State Park — all shot on film and developed by hand — that will be on view starting tonight in the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center.
Note: The exhibit is from a few days ago, so the pictures may not be on display any more.

Improving tourist signs in city becomes priority
From the Buffalo News:
The generations- old debate over the best use of street signs to direct tourists to local attractions may be nearing a settlement — but not quite yet.
City Council Chairman Sam Fruscione and Mayor Paul A. Dyster said they plan to discuss the issue during a private meeting today, and the mayor said the present street-direction signs “leave a lot to be desired, especially in the downtown area.”
Members of the Tourism Advisory Board, which makes recommendations to the City Council, agreed by consensus Monday that too many signs direct tourists toward the Rainbow Bridge to Canada instead of toward Niagara Falls State Park, Goat Island and local attractions. Fruscione said he would take the advisory board’s concerns to the mayor today.
