Travel photo of the day: Colorful Niagara Falls
From the Travel section of the NBC Today Show web site (including photo):
Mary Umbricht of Seekonk, Mass., captured this beautiful photo of Niagara Falls.
Umbricht took the picture on Saturday while spending a long weekend in Canada. There was “a lot of color,” she told TODAY.com, and visibility was great due to no leaves on the trees.

Falls Parks: Canada Thrives, U.S. Struggles
From WNED-AM 970 NEWS:
On one side of Niagara Falls, state parks need $85 million in repairs while on the Ontario side millions of dollars are going into renovation of Old Fort Erie and the Laura Secord House.
WNED’s Mike Desmond talked with the Chairwoman of the Niagara Parks Commission, Fay Booker, about the difference.
This year, the commission will spend around $100 million (Canadian) on its capital and operating budgets, serving millions of visitors from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Ontario agency is set up to pay for itself by raising money and keeping it.

Niagara Falls State Park getting upgrades after critical NY Times article
From an Associated Press article seen on Yahoo! News Canada:
Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the U.S., is getting some special attention after its condition was criticized in a recent New York Times article.
State parks officials say they’re launching a three-part plan to improve the 126-year-old park along the brink of Niagara Falls.

36 Hours in Niagara Falls
From the New York Times:
At Niagara Falls, the United States is the poor relation and Canada is king. Nature gave Canada the wide-angle view of the majestic waterfall that straddles the border between the two countries, and the Canadians’ commercial bet on tourism landed most of the visitor comforts on their side of the Niagara River. American reliance on industry, however, ended in Rust Belt ruin. Yet the story isn’t so simple. Casinos, high-rise hotels and hucksterish come-ons have so proliferated in Niagara Falls, Ontario, that it risks feeling like a tired amusement park. Meanwhile, in Niagara Falls, New York, the visitor who ventures inside the shabby, underfinanced state park is surprised to discover vestiges of something like a natural landscape. The party is in Canada. The real feel of the river, in all its awesome power, is more accessible in the United States. Hop back and forth to get the best of both Niagaras and see for yourself.

The Traveling Camera: Niagra Falls
From The Source Weekly (including a nice picture):
Niagara Falls is one of those places where you can forget its beauty because the falls are surrounded by cheesy attractions in Canada and by rather squalid urban areas on the American side. But the falls are still impressive.

‘It feels more like a park than a Parkway’
From the Niagara Falls Review:
The inaugural Car-Free Day on the Niagara Parkway wasn’t free of suggestions from both tourists and locals who want to see the event evolve from its humble beginnings Sunday.
“This is awesome,” said Mike Sherman, a cyclist from Montreal who was riding down the empty Parkway toward the Horseshoe Falls with fellow Montrealer Jen Zwarych.
“I think it’s great,” Zwarych said, adding it was their first time in Niagara Falls. “It’s a little empty though. We’ve never been here with the cars, but if the cars are louder than the falls it would definitely make it less cool.”
For the first time ever, the Niagara Parks Commission on Sunday shut down the Niagara Parkway to vehicle traffic, except the NPC’s people-mover buses.
