Niagara Falls road with three names could soon just have one name

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A road with three names could soon have just one in downtown Niagara Falls.

Regional council’s public works committee has recommended letting the city rename Roberts St. and Newman Hill to Falls Ave., matching the stretch of road running through the city’s tourist area.

What about Victoria Ave, Ferry St, and Lundy’s Lane?

Niagara Helicopters sold: ‘The same team is still going to be here’

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara Helicopters has been sold, but Ruedi Hafen will continue to be the public face of the company.

Anna Pierce, vice-president of Niagara Helicopters, confirmed to The Niagara Falls Review Thursday that a deal was reached with Helicopter Transport Services on Dec. 7.

“It was something that has been in the process for quite awhile,” said Pierce, adding further details will be made public in the new year.

“The same team is still going to be here. It will mean a lot of cost savings for us.”

Wallenda taking his case to tourism minister

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Niagara Parks Commission slammed the door on Nik Wallenda Wednesday, but a day later Minister of Tourism Michael Chan opened it up just a bit.

Speaking with the Niagara Falls Review Thursday, the Ontario tourism minister invited Wallenda, a seventh-generation aerialist who wants to walk across the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope, to come and speak with him.

“My door is always open. I welcome the opportunity to meet Mr. Wallenda,” said Chan, who confirmed he had nothing to do with the NPC’s decision to reject Wallenda’s proposal. “This particular project is under the watch of many, many people. It has huge interest around the world.”

Asked if he would stand behind the NPC’s ruling, Chan seemed to leave the door open, saying there are big issues at play.

“One of the major factors is economics. These are uncertain economic times. Jobs are important, the economy is important. That’s why, my door is open to listen to people,” he said.

WALLENDA POLL: ‘We had some monkey business’

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Nik Wallenda knew something was up.

First he got an email from a fan congratulating him on the support on a Niagara Falls Review website poll. Then, a few minutes later, he got a call from his dad.

“He said ‘I’ve been keeping an eye on the polls. I just checked it and all of a sudden about 100 people voted against you.’ As we were talking he refreshed the page and another 40 or 50 people voted. I went online and it was at 1,300 within minutes,” Wallenda said from his home in Sarasota, Fla.

Online polls might not be scientific, but they typically show a general feeling of the population. In the case of Wallenda, the poll was asking whether or not people agreed with Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati supporting the tightrope walker’s proposal to walk across the Horseshoe Falls, or with Review city editor Corey Larocque, who was opposed. The two had debated the issue and the public was being asked to weigh in with their opinion.

BALANCING ACT: Review city editor and Falls mayor debate merits of wire walk across Niagara Gorge

The Niagara Falls Review has a nice back-and-forth between their City Editor Corey Larocque and Mayor Jim Diodati:

Tightrope walker Nik Wallenda wants to walk a wire across the Niagara Gorge next summer, but the Niagara Parks Commission, whose approval he needs, is cold to the idea.

Mayor Jim Diodati is eager to see Wallenda get the green light. Diodati took the matter up with Premier Dalton McGuinty’s senior staff when the Ontario Liberals were in Niagara Falls on Saturday.

But The Review’s city editor Corey Larocque is skeptical about using Niagara Falls for this spectacle.

So, Diodati and Larocque recently hashed it out. This is an edited transcript of their debate.

NPC appoints new chair

From Niagara This Week:

After almost five months in the interim position, Janice Thomson has been appointed the chair of the Niagara Parks Commission’s Board of Directors.

While the announcement was made by Tourism and Culture Minister Michael Chan on Wednesday, the appointment was actually effective Nov. 16. Thomson, executive director of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce & Visitor and Convention Bureau, also has experience as a sales and marketing consultant and a former owner and operator of a restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Niagara Falls Review also had an article called Janice Thomson named permanent chair of NPC

Some postings on Marineland losing Ikaika

The rest of the posts today, and a couple tomorrow will be on the news that Marineland shipped Ikaika back to SeaWorld San Diego. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If Marineland loses all of their Killer Whales (if Kiska dies), it will be a huge loss!

Whale leaves Marineland for San Diego

From Buffalo Business First:

It took a crane and a fleet of transport trucks to do it, but Ikaika the orca whale has returned home from Marineland to San Diego.

SeaWorld San Diego had loaned Ikaika to Marineland of Niagara Falls, Ont., in 2006 in exchange for four beluga whales. But SeaWorld’s parent company launched legal action last year to secure Ikaika’s return, according to the Niagara Falls Review.

Wallenda making pitch to Canada for tightrope walk

From the Niagara Gazette:

Nik Wallenda’s lifelong dream may be coming closer to reality.

The tightrope walker and his team met with Canadian officials Thursday in continuing efforts to convince that side of the border to allow a wire walk next year above Niagara Falls. Wallenda said he wasn’t expecting anything but a continuation of the dialogue his group has had with elected officials.

“I don’t perceive a 100 percent go-ahead,” he said during a press conference Thursday. “We’re just discussing the next step. But we’ve gotten great support from Mayor Jim Diodati and the other officials”

I saw several other articles about this:
