Witness: person went over U.S. Falls

Apparently there are reports that someone went over the Falls last week. I wonder how many reports they get each year, and how many remain unsolved since they can’t find the body (I hope that doesn’t sound too morbid).

Niagara Falls Tightrope Walk: Flying Wallenda To Make History

From WebProNews:

When you come from a family of famous tightrope walkers that’s 7 generations long, you tend to look for ways to go bigger and better. It looks like Nik Wallenda has found one.

This June, he intends to walk a tightrope stretched directly over the waterfall at Niagara Falls–about 1800 feet across and 200 feet from the bottom–between the U.S. and Canada. If he succeeds, he’ll be the first person ever to cross right over the waterfall.

Room rates skyrocket for Wallenda walk

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The average price of a Fallsview hotel room will double on June 15, the day Nik Wallenda walks across Niagara Falls on a tightrope, according to a survey of select hotel websites.

The Review compared the price of a standard room, with two queen-sized beds, with a view of the falls on June 15, to the price of the same room the Friday before and after the event.

The price jumps 100% from June 8 to 15 — $208 to $415 — then drops back down to an average of $248 the following Friday.

“If there’s a spectacular event coming to the city, the demand for rooms is certainly going to increase,” said Wayne Thomson, who works for the Fallsview Group, which operates some of the high-rise hotels in the Fallsview district.

“Is that shocking or unusual? No. In the summertime, rates go up substantially. It’s supply and demand. Obviously people will shop around to try and find the best rate.

“If two weeks before the event rooms are not filled, then you will see a decline (in price). Ultimately, they want to fill the rooms.”

Nik Wallenda prepares for stunt of a lifetime

Note: This is the BEST article I’ve read about the walk so far. It shares some nice details of how he will rig up the wire as well as other details of the performance.

From the Sarasota Florida Herald-Tribune:

To understand the enormity of Nik Wallenda’s planned high-wire walk across Niagara Falls this summer, it helps to look at another skywalking display the Sarasota native put on in his hometown two years ago.

On that crisp, clear winter morning, the seventh-generation aerialist walked softly across 600 feet of steel cable from the Watergate condos to the Ritz-Carlton hotel. For 12 minutes, he wowed spectators 200 feet below and dared a national television audience to switch channels.

But the trek over Horseshoe Falls — part of the Niagara River’s Ice Age formation separating the U.S. from Canada — will make that feat look like a piker’s errand.

Daredevil’s wire-walk destiny set June 15

From the Buffalo News:

American tourism officials had hoped for a later date — possibly in September — for Nik Wallenda to perform his tightrope walk over Niagara Falls.

But they’re more than happy with the date government officials on both sides of the international border and the daredevil artist have agreed upon — June 15.

Officials on the U.S. side had hoped for a date after Labor Day because they wanted more time to plan, and because the 2,000 downtown hotel rooms are typically booked through the summer tourist season without such a big event.

Canadian officials preferred a June date because it would kick off their already-bustling summer tourist season. Roughly 16,000 hotel rooms will be available in Niagara Falls, Ont., with 10,000 located directly around the falls.

With the date now set, the ultimate goal is to draw visitors to the two cities and send them home with a desire to return, tourism officials on both sides said.
