From the Niagara Falls Review:

One of the most dramatic and tragic events in the history of Niagara Falls took place 100 years ago Saturday.

Feb. 4, 1912, a Sunday, was a clear, windy and very cold day in Niagara Falls. Nevertheless, hundreds of people — both residents and tourists — were on hand that morning to view the gorgeous winter scenery around the falls and to take a walk on the ice bridge.

One of Niagara’s most spectacular winter creations, the ice bridge is essentially a suspended glacier, often of great thickness, that stretches across the gorge just below the Falls. Beginning in the 1880s, it became a popular winter playground. Local businessmen even set up concession shanties out on the ice where one could buy drinks, including whisky, hot dogs, souvenirs and get a tintype picture taken.

Wirewalker Nik Wallenda headed back home to Florida Thursday night feeling good about his meeting with Niagara Parks Commission officials.

Of course, Nik Wallenda is pretty much always feeling good. Through this long process of trying to get permission to walk on a tightrope across the Niagara Gorge near the Horseshoe Falls, Wallenda has maintained almost unflappable composure, resolve and optimism – the kind of characteristics one might expect from someone who makes his living on a three-inch steel cable.

“It doesn’t do any good to be negative. I’ve said all along this is my dream and I’m just going to keep on going for it. People can say no, but it just makes me want to work harder.”

“I’ve always said I want to make Niagara Falls my second home,” the Florida-based Wallenda told Bullet News on Monday. “Why wouldn’t I? Look at the crowds that come through Niagara Falls. I wouldn’t be a very good businessman if I didn’t consider something like that.”

Wallenda, 32, is part of the famed circus family the Flying Wallendas.

“It’s always been a big dream to have a Wallenda family show that runs at least all summer. Why not have a Nik Wallenda theatre with a show three-six months of the year? This has been the ultimate goal all along. This is definitely not a one-off thing.”

Deliberations in Canada over the future of the Maid of the Mist sightseeing boats at Niagara Falls are being closely watched in the United States, where elected and tourism officials want to avoid disruptions to an iconic draw that brings millions of tourists to the Falls each year.

The double-decker boats ferry people from both sides of the Niagara River to the base of the Horseshoe Falls under separate agreements with New York state and Ontario, Canada. The tours have run continuously since 1846.

The Niagara Parks Commission, an arm of the Ontario government that controls the land and buildings around the Canadian falls, approved a 25-year contract with the Maid of the Mist Steamship Co. in 2008. But the lack of competition for the deal drew criticism, so the commission called for bids from competing boat tour operators for the first time.

The multimillion-dollar bids are under review; the commission is expected to make its recommendation to Ontario’s tourism minister in February, though at one point it had anticipated choosing a company by the end of last year.

Stopping in front the book’s cover image—a breathtaking vision of Niagara Falls—she explained that this was the picture that led to all the rest. She took in the view on a trip with her children, and watched them stare out at the water, mesmerized. “I stood behind them, they were actually in front of me, and I took this picture. It’s a photograph that anyone can take. It’s an American snapshot,” she said. “Actually, we were in Canada. A Canadian snapshot.”

I got to thinking about Soucek after reading that Nik Wallenda is still trying to get official permission to walk on a high wire above Niagara Falls. These fellows always come to Niagara Falls, don’t they?
