Spandy Andy’s Niagara Falls adventure!
I posted recently about Spandy Andy. Well, the Clifton Hill Blog caught up with him recently and asked him some questions. The “interview” doesn’t reveal much, but it is interesting, and there is at least one reference to Niagara Falls.

Bringing Kimmel show to Canada to cost taxpayers
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Bringing the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show to Ontario will cost four taxpayer-funded funded tourist agencies a total of $450,000, according to the Niagara-based tourism organization involved in the effort to bring segments of the ABC late-night show to Canada.
“There is funding involved. It’s about a half a million dollars for all of the partners and our contribution was $50,000,” said Robin Garrett, the CEO of the Tourism Partnership of Niagara.
The Niagara tourism agency is funded entirely by the provincial tourism ministry, Garrett said.
With Tourism Toronto leading the effort, the four agencies are putting up the $450,000 to pay for the Kimmel show to shoot segments featuring Kimmel security guard sidekick Guillermo Diaz Rodriguez.
Guillermo, as he’s popularly known, will be reporting to back to Kimmel — who will be at his Los Angeles studio — from the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The show will also be shooting in Niagara Falls.

Jimmy Kimmel Show making Niagara detour
From the Niagara Falls Review:
The Jimmy Kimmel Show will be filming segments in Niagara Falls next week, but it’s still unclear whether Kimmel himself will be here.
Robin Garrett, CEO of the Tourism Partnership of Niagara, said there’s no guarantee the popular ABC talk show host will appear, but “we are negotiating that as we speak.”
But fans of Kimmel’s security guard sidekick Guillermo are in luck. The show is sending him to do humorous red carpet interviews during the Toronto International Film Festival, and from Sept. 12 to 15 he’ll make sporadic visits to Niagara Falls for segments to air next week.
Luring the show to Niagara Falls was a joint effort between Tourism Toronto, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership, Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism Partnership of Niagara and Air Canada.

Novel peers over the edge
From Niagara This Week:
As a highly successful fantasy writer, Chris Van Allsburg knows first-hand that the only limitation on a great story is one’s imagination.
But when it comes to dabbling in reality, the renowned children’s novelist and illustrator had to peer over the edge and simply hope for the best with his latest project — Queen of the Falls.
“I was worried at first, but Annie’s life was very interesting,” said Van Allsburg, who grew up in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, and developed a fascination with Niagara Falls during the early 1970s.
The “Annie” in question was Annie Edson Taylor — a 63-year-old charm school teacher and widow who became the first and only woman to complete a solo run over the falls back in 1901.
Cool! Chris Van Allsburg also wrote Jumanji and The Polar Express. Obviously both were made into movies. It’d be cool to have a “popular” movie about something in/around Niagara Falls…

West 49 Take The Cake in Niagara Falls
I don’t know where I’ve been for the last few months, but I’m just hearing about this now (even though the earliest reference I can see about this is back in May). West 49 has an event called Take the Cake that will take place at the beginning of October:
To mark 15 years as Canada’s largest retail skateboard shop, West 49 is celebrating in a big way. West 49 Take The Cake skateboard contest will take place in Niagara Falls, Ontario in October 2010.
On Saturday, October 2, 2010, West 49 Take The Cake will erupt Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls featuring 10 of the worlds most influential and recognizable pro skaters throwing down their best tricks for a $100,000.00 CASH prize. Canada’s largest Cash purse event in Canada.
Attending skaters will be Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Chaz Ortiz, Torey Pudwill, Sierra Fellers, Corey Duffel, Darrell Stanton, Alex Olson, Chima Ferguson, Brandon Westgate, Shuriken Shannon, Matt Miller, Paul Trep, Grant Patterson and Tom Asta. I’m not familiar with these names (it’s not really my crowd), but a quick search shows that some of these people are quite famous.
It looks like it will cost $40 to attend.
UPDATE: @NiagaraParksPR let me know that there will be general admission tickets available for $10 and a weekend pass will be $15.

I don’t know anything about this, but apparently there is going to be a play that is “about a real-life lady daredevil who survived a plunge over Niagara Falls”. The play will be about Annie Taylor.

Screenshots from “Greg Frewin Magic Man Home for the Holidays” 2009 TV Special
I’m closer to Christmas 2010 than to Christmas 2009, but hey, better late than never…
As many of you know, Greg Frewin had a Christmas special broadcast on CBC last December. It was called Greg Frewin Magic Man Home For The Holidays. The show was an hour long and chronicled his planning of an outdoor winter performance at Table Rock Place.
I love to see Greg Frewin perform, so for that reason, I enjoyed the show. You saw him do several magic tricks or illusions during his stage show, in a classroom, in a restaurant, and outside. He is an amazing performer. On the other hand, it was supposed to be like a documentary or a “reality” show, and it just looked bad in the parts that were staged. There was one scene that was shot inside Elements restaurant at Table Rock Place that was particularly fake.
The bottom line, though, is that it is always good to see Niagara Falls promoted in such a positive way. I hope it helped Greg’s business this year!
I have taken a bunch of screenshots from the episode. You can see some of the thumbnails below, and the full versions in the Greg Frewin Magic Man Home For The Holidays (2009 TV Special) gallery.
Note: There were 3,204 images in 251 galleries in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery at the time they were posted.

Kane’s day: Niagara Falls, stuck on truck ladder
From Chicago Breaking Sports:
From the raging rapids of Niagara Falls to a perch high above his hometown to an old-fashioned floor hockey game, Patrick Kane had quite a day with the Stanley Cup.
The Blackhawks winger, who scored the game-winning goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Flyers in June, had his day with the coveted trophy Friday and criss-crossed Buffalo via police escort to showcase the chalice and celebrate the victory.
