The American Falls will have a morning show feel to them Thursday night.

As part of the Today Show’s 60th anniversary, NBC has arranged to have the show’s familiar red, orange and yellow colours illuminated on both the American and Horseshoe Falls, starting at 5 p.m. Footage will be shown on Friday’s Today Show, wrapping up a week of anniversary celebrations.

“We’re having the Empire State Building lit up here in Manhattan, the Bellagio in Las Vegas, the CIRA Centre in Philadelphia,” says NBC spokeswoman Monica Lee. “We’re glad that everyone’s joining from each area.”

Lee says Niagara Falls was a “natural” choice for producers to tap, and Today Show hosts have been hyping it all week. The colours will be displayed until midnight.

Niagara museums will go loonie later this month with more than a dozen attractions in the Clifton Hill area offering a deep discount on admission prices for local residents.

Niagara Falls residents can visit 14 attractions for $1 on Jan. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The popular $1 Museum Day event will raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Canada. More than $12,000 was raised last year.

The event has been entertaining local residents for the past 24 years.

“It’s become a second-generation event,” said Nancy Clayton, vice-president of the foundation’s Niagara chapter.

“Now, we get people who grew up with the event who are now bringing their own kids.”

DJ Steve Aoki is fine with reality shows on MTV instead of music. He welcomes more American Idol knockoffs.

As far as he’s concerned, they’re great for his industry because they’re forcing people to seek out good music more than ever. When they find something that wasn’t manufactured by a TV show or record company hype, they flock to it.

“Now, kids are forced to discover music on their own terms,” says Aoki, who’ll be part of an all-night dance party at the Scotiabank Convention Centre New Year’s Eve. “It created an open lane for all this music to be discovered. I’m happy for all the reality shows on TV.

“People aren’t lazy – they’re going on YouTube, SoundCloud and Facebook and finding music themselves. That’s the power of dance music – it’s mainly a viral music. You have to discover the music yourself.”

The scaffolding is being set up, the stage will soon be in place, and the thousands will soon jam down Old Falls Street, as 2012 will be ushered in in fine musical fashion.

For the third year, The Hard Rock Guitar Drop will bring in the new year. The metal rigging is currently being welded by city workers at the welding shop where plows are usually the main repair. The mini-zamboni is out on the outdoor skating rink surrounded by a holiday market place, in short The Falls is ready to roll out the red carpet.

When something works, the Niagara Parks Police like to stick with it.

Even though Ontario’s liquor laws were loosened up a bit this past summer, those wishing to have a few drinks at the New Year’s Eve party in Queen Victoria Park will have to remain inside a designated area where alcohol is served.

“The last two years we’ve had a licensed area and that discourages people from bringing in their own alcohol into the park and we don’t have to worry about people tripping over empty bottles or bottles being thrown,” said Niagara Parks Police Chief Doug Kane. “We are able to secure the area so that it’s remains a safe family event.”

It’ll be a loud gathering of techno and electronic music going until nearly dawn. Just don’t call it a rave.

For two decades, the free televised concert down at Queen Victoria Park has been synonymous with New Year’s Eve in Niagara Falls. But there’s a new party in town this year, and it doesn’t end at midnight. It’ll just be warming up.

Golden New Year’s Eve 2012 will be an eight-hour, indoor dance party at the Scotiabank Convention Centre Niagara featuring renowned DJs Avicii and Steve Aoki, along with Toronto’s Manzone & Strong and Niagara’s Christina Cruise. The music starts at 8 p.m. and goes until 4 a.m.

Unlike the typical rave, the event will have tight security, a dress code and admission starting at $75.

Later this month, for the 20th time, there will be a big, free New Year’s Eve concert down at Queen Victoria Park.

Also happening for the 20th time? Griping about the New Year’s Eve concert.

Like Auld Lang Syne and jacked-up hotel rates, it’s a New Year’s tradition in Niagara Falls. The second the lineup is announced, the complaints begin. It doesn’t matter that the show doesn’t cost a cent, it doesn’t matter there are endless other things to do (including a rave at the convention centre this year) … the New Year’s show is our nationally televised badge of honour, and we take it serious.

The problem organizers face with this show is trying to please two very different camps – the rock show crowd, and the family concert crowd. The two don’t mix well, and I’m not sure they should. Pleasing one means shortchanging the other.
