West 49 Take The Cake in Niagara Falls

I don’t know where I’ve been for the last few months, but I’m just hearing about this now (even though the earliest reference I can see about this is back in May). West 49 has an event called Take the Cake that will take place at the beginning of October:

To mark 15 years as Canada’s largest retail skateboard shop, West 49 is celebrating in a big way. West 49 Take The Cake skateboard contest will take place in Niagara Falls, Ontario in October 2010.

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, West 49 Take The Cake will erupt Oakes Garden Theatre in Niagara Falls featuring 10 of the worlds most influential and recognizable pro skaters throwing down their best tricks for a $100,000.00 CASH prize. Canada’s largest Cash purse event in Canada.

Attending skaters will be Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Chaz Ortiz, Torey Pudwill, Sierra Fellers, Corey Duffel, Darrell Stanton, Alex Olson, Chima Ferguson, Brandon Westgate, Shuriken Shannon, Matt Miller, Paul Trep, Grant Patterson and Tom Asta. I’m not familiar with these names (it’s not really my crowd), but a quick search shows that some of these people are quite famous.

It looks like it will cost $40 to attend.

UPDATE: @NiagaraParksPR let me know that there will be general admission tickets available for $10 and a weekend pass will be $15.

From Hennepin to hydro

From the Niagara Falls Review (including a video):

The area around Niagara Falls was to be preserved as “a mecca of peace” for the “millions of overworked and tired humanity” to enjoy, according to John Langmuir, the second chairman of the Niagara Parks Commission.

A century and a quarter after it was created, the parks commission is still meeting that objective, said historian Sherman Zavitz, who quoted Langmuir’s vision during a walking tour of Queen Victoria Park Sunday.

“He thought about that for a while before he wrote those lines,” Zavitz said.

Sunday’s tour was one of the events marking this year’s 125th anniversary of the Niagara Parks Commission’s creation in 1885. Zavitz will lead a second free tour Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., leaving from the parks police station.

Inked and Pinked

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Before she got the party started Saturday night, pop star Pink had her eye on Niagara Falls.

“It’s my second time here,” said one of the top-selling female singers of the past decade. “I went on the Maid of the Mist last time. I was considering the barrel this time.”

With hits like So What and Trouble, the 30-year-old Pink — real name, Alecia Moore — was in town for the grand opening of husband Carey Hart’s first Canadian location of his Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. chain. The couple were greeted by hundreds of fans gathered at a VIP reception at Margaritaville.

The King dethroned

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The King was here, but his followers missed the memo.

The first annual Niagara Falls Elvis Festival was marred by slim crowds and some angry vendors over the weekend.

Most wondered why the event wasn’t promoted more, and felt sorry for the top notch entertainers gathered at Oakes Garden Theatre.

“One of the Elvis’ said (on Friday), ‘I’m not sticking around, there’s no one to sing to,’ ” said vendor Sheila Szalai, who paid nearly $600 with her husband Karl to operate a jewelry booth for the three-day event. By Saturday afternoon, they had made just two sales.

“We won’t be back.”

The sour mood hung over the venue Saturday as Elvis tribute artists played to barely 150 people by late afternoon. It was a far cry from the thousands organizers expected for the inaugural event.

“This is stupid, this place should be packed,” said Niagara Falls resident Della Meunier. “I love Elvis, and I am very disappointed for this. Fans just didn’t know it was going on.

“Why was it kept so secretive?”

Niagara Falls salutes Elvis, his actual band

From the London Free Press:

The summer of Elvis sightings continues, shifting to Niagara Falls, in what would have been the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s” 75th birthday year.

The Niagara Falls Elvis Festival will attract 25 “tribute artists” from next Thursday through Sunday (Aug. 19-22).

With an outdoor venue having the Falls as the dramatic backdrop and indoor events, the festival is put on by Niagara-area native William Maurice, an Elvis tribute artist and his company, Universal Media Group International.

Being presented in “the world’s most spectacular place,” the festival pays tribute to the anniversary of Elvis’ birth, he said. Expected to attract 4,000 to 6,000 people, it occurs 33 years after Elvis’ death.

What’s important is “the Elvis factor” — that is the “fans that travel extensively throughout the world to relive the life and times of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Maurice said.

“It’s not about winning, it’s about the journey and the lessons you learn along the way”

Yesterday I posted a little about meeting Jon Montgomery, the gold-medal winning skeleton athlete. As I mentioned, he spoke for a few minutes. He is available as a speaker, and based on the couple of minutes he spoke for, I’m sure he does a good job at giving motivating speeches. I recorded his speech, and have included the main part of his speech below. You can listen to it in the included player (available on the web site, not in the feed) below. I’ve also transcribed the speech as best I can.

http://accessniagara.com/blog/media/audio/20100311_Jon_Montgomery_at_IMAX_Theatre.mp3

It all began in Russell, Manitoba where I was born and raised and had the pleasure of playing hockey with an unbelievable talented group of young individuals. Growing up we had it instilled in us from an early age what it was like to be competitive and to be able to have pride of ownership and be a part of a team and something greater than yourself.

When I went to college I lost that edge, that competitive spirit because I wasn’t able to play hockey in college (we didn’t have a team in Texas or a very good one in Barrie for that matter). I was really looking for something.

When I moved to Calgary after graduation for an auctioneering job, I had an opportunity to try some of the sports you just don’t get a chance to do in Canada because the facilities don’t exist. And because of this legacy of the ’88 games and now hopefully the legacy from the 2010 games will encourage that many more people to get involved, I had a chance to try things like speed skating, and when I did a self-guided tour of COP one day, I chanced upon a skeleton race and at the time I didn’t know skeleton existed. It wasn’t even on my radar. So I saw this athlete coming out of corner 8, going down the longest straightaway in the world, going into corner 9 in Calgary going a 125 km/h my first impression was, “Oh my god this luge athlete is going down backwards, there must have been a horrible accident.” I’m never going profess to be the sharpest guy in the world , but after seeing 4 more athletes come down in the same manner, I recognized the trend, I thought to myself, “This must be something different, I’d never seen it before.” So I made it my day’s mission to find out how I could get involved in the sport and how I could try my hand at it. A week later I got to do just that, I did my first run. And I can honestly say from that day forward I was hooked. It was like a bad drug. You know, you take that first hit and there’s no looking back. And that for me was skeleton

From that point, I really wanted to find something to sink my teeth into, to call my own, and to eventually represent Canada at. And skeleton seemed like a good vehicle for me, something that A) I was absolutely enamored with because of the speed and the thrill factor, and B) because it seemed like a viable vehicle to get me to that national level. From that day forward, and especially since July 3, 2003 when Canada was awarded the host nation and city for the 2010 winter Olympics, that cemented my goals for me, and from that day forward I made it my mission to earn that privilege to represent our country at home in Canada.

Along the way my goals have evolved to wanting to be the gold medal winner and stand on top of that podium. Like skeleton racing, I was involved in other extreme-type sports or adventures growing up; skydiving and bungee jumping and bridge jumping up around the muskoka area. All these sorts of things appealed to me, but I’m not like everybody else. Some people are passionate about academics, some people are passionate about art, dance, and all these things. The one thing I would encourage you to do and the one thing I actively did was I sought out challenges, I sought out new experiences I sought out things that would scare me. I sought out things that would push the limits of my comfort zone and try to step beyond them.

Whether your interests lie in sports, or extreme sports, or academics, or arts or anything like that, I would encourage each and every one of you, and have you encourage your kids, to try to step out of your comfort zone and really push yourself. That is where you are going to find the things that really peak your interest. That is where you are going to find the things that you can be passionate about, sink your teeth into, call your own, and hopefully end up at the top. It’s not about winning, it’s about the journey and the lessons you learn along the way.

Jon Montgomery at Imax Theater in March 2010

Yes, I know that I am over 3 months late on this one, but better late than never…

Back in March, the Niagara Falls IMAX Theatre hosted a free evening where they were previewing a new film called Extreme. To help with the promotion, they brought in Jon Montgomery. Jon won a gold-medal in skeleton at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

It was quite an evening. There was a reception before the movie where we could meet Jon and get our picture taken with him. I took my son with me and he was thrilled to meet him. He even got to help Jon hold the gold medal. Jon also signed a small flag for us as well as the tickets. Someone I know brought their collection of Olympic coins and had him sign the collector card. What a great idea! I have three sets and I wanted to kick myself for not thinking of it myself.

There was also a girl there from Welland who had carried a torch, so we got to see and hold that as well.

During the reception there was food and drinks available.

Eventually we all ended up in the theatre. Mayor Ted Salci was there and gave Jon a gift, and then Jon said a few words. We then watched the movie. My son fell asleep during the movie. Not that it wasn’t exciting, but by that point we had been there for almost three hours.

Anyway, it was a nice night. How often do you get to meet a gold-medal winning athlete? I’ve never met one before, and I don’t know when I will again, so it was a nice opportunity. Thank you IMAX Theatre!

I took a few pictures while there. You can see the thumbnails below, or view the full images in the 20100311 Jon Montgomery at IMAX Theatre gallery.

Note: There are now 3,019 images in 243 galleries in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery.

What I’ve heard about the Niagara Falls Motorcycle Rally

I was talking to my neighhbour the other day. He had originally told me he was going to Safari Niagara on Father’s Day. I asked him how the trip was, and he said that he hadn’t gone as he went to the Niagara Falls Motorcycle Rally (he’s got a Harley and loves to ride). I asked him how it was, and these were his thoughts:

  • He had originally hear that it would have more than the big rally in Port Dover (I read one estimate of 50,000 bikers). He estimates there were 300-500 bikers (I can’t say how accurate that is). This is surprising given the publicity, and promotion on Facebook and Twitter
  • He felt the ride was too short. He’s used to rides that could be 30km-50km. This one was only around 10-20 km. They started at Rapidsview Park (across from Marineland), went up to the roundabout by Queenston Heights, and then ended at .
  • He said there were very few vendors at Rapidsview Park (he commented specifically that there were no t-shirts available), and very little food or drink available.
  • He said he wouldn’t go again. I’ve looked at some of the comments on Facebook, and he may be in the minority. It seems that although many people feel there is lots of for improvement, they still enjoyed themselves. I’m sure my neighbour will go again.

I realize that these are the comments of only one person, but I still thought they were worth sharing.

Bikers rally

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It was the first , and judging by the tremendous response, it won’t be the last.

The aim was to bring hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts from across Canada to town during the Father’s Day weekend to see what the Niagara area has to offer and to raise money for charity.

It worked and organizers couldn’t be happier.

“This is our first one and we made some mistakes, but we’ll do things better next time,” Sue McDowell, executive director of the Fallsview BIA, told those in attendance Sunday morning at the Rapidsview parking lot, across the road from Marineland.
