Construction at Kelsey’s on Clifton Hill almost done.
I posted previously that Kelsey’s was undergoing renovations, and a sign on the door said it would open Feb 2. It didn’t open on the 2nd, but will open on the 10th. At one point the restaurant was gutted. It looks to be almost done and looks very nice.

BeaverTails snacks
I don’t know how long it has been there for, but a few weeks ago I noticed for the first time that there is a BeaverTails stand along Oneida Lane (just off Clifton Hill). It’s probably been there for a while, I just never noticed it. I rarely go down or look down that street.

Rainforest Cafe threatens suit against animal advocates
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Canadian Niagara Hotels has threatened a local animal advocacy group with legal action if it doesn’t remove online postings claiming mistreatment of animals at the Rainforest Cafe.
Last month, Marineland Animal Defense (MAD) posted on its website and Facebook page that an employee at the Clifton Hill theme restaurant said a number of fish had been removed from a 5,500-gallon aquarium after a crack had formed in a tank.
According to MAD, a local group that advocates for the end of animal captivity at Marineland, several horse-eye jack fish died during the transfer process and a white-tip reef shark was being housed in a pool that is inadequate for the animal.
The Niagara Falls Humane Society inspected the facility Jan. 3 and deemed the temporary housing met the standards of the Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act as well as the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
“It’s not my intent to get into a debate with the principals of that association, but I wanted to be on record that we’re dealing with these animals very responsibly,” Doug Birrell, president of Canadian Niagara Hotels, said of the group’s claims.

Windows by Jamie Kennedy restaurant

Last year it was announced that famous chef Jamie Kennedy was going to be starting a restaurant that is part of the Canadian Niagara Hotels property. Windows by Jamie Kennedy – Niagara Falls now has a web site. There are short bios of Jamie Kennedy (responsible for the food) and Tony Aspler (responsible for the wine) as well as a very professionally done video talking about the restaurant. It’s worth a look.
The site also says the restaurant will be opening in February 2012.

Jack’s Cantina is all gone
I meant to post a picture a few weeks ago, but kept forgetting. As you will recall, Jack’s Cantina burned down more than a month ago. The remains of the building were left for a couple of weeks, and then a few weeks ago the building was removed and the property cleaned up. Now it is just an empty lot.

BUSINESS BEAT: What’s behind the white tarp?
From the Niagara Falls Review:
The Mascia family knows being competitive in the restaurant industry means staying up-to-date both on the menu and the walls.
So, later this week, the white tarps will come down from the front of the family’s Victoria Ave. business, unveiling a new look for an old restaurant.
The Antica Pizzeria has been around for 22 years, the last 17 under the ownership of John and Dora Mascia. Dora worked at the restaurant for the first five years it was open and then bought it from the previous owners. Today, the couple runs the restaurant along with their four sons. Though it’s an authentic Italian restaurant, Dave Mascia, one of the sons, said the building needed an update. “We’re giving the whole place a face lift. You have to give customers the atmosphere. You don’t have to give them checkered tablecloths to look Italian,” he said.

Antica Pizzeria covered with tarp
This picture was taken a few days ago. As you can see, Antica Pizzeria on Victoria Avenue was covered with tarp as they worked on the facade. I’ve posted about the work several times before.

I haven’t been by for a few days, so I’m not sure if the tarp has been removed or not.
UPDATE: I was by yesterday, and some, but not all, of the tarp has been removed.
