Broadway show goes bust
From the Niagara Falls Review:
It was another bitter pill for local theatre buffs to swallow this week with the closure of ’100 Years of Broadway.’
The lavish musical, which gathered several high-profile Broadway stars to sing their signature songs, closed at the Scotiabank Convention Centre Niagara last Sunday after just 12 performances. It was booked through Sept. 4.
Despite rave reviews from theatregoers, the show was drawing miniscule crowds – often 30 to 50 people in the 1,000-seat convention centre theatre.

Canada’s newest convention hot spot
From Business Link Niagara:
Canada’s Honeymoon City has long been known as a tourist destination. Anchored by the iconic Niagara Falls itself, a thriving hospitality and attractions sector has become the face of the city.
That isn’t going away, but Niagara Falls is taking big strides to go beyond the bright lights to position itself as one of Canada’s top destinations for conventions, conferences and trade shows.
“Tourism is very much driven by the seasons, but conventions and business travellers will make Niagara Falls a year-round destination,” says Anthony Annunziata, Vice-President of Marketing at the Marriott Gateway on the Falls . “Niagara Falls has a premier facility for large corporate gatherings, with all the amenities to keep your employees, delegates and clients happy when not on the convention floor.”

Scotiabank Convention Centre big hit with visitors
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Pretty impressive.
That’s what most people were saying on the weekend after getting their first opportunity to tour the new $100-million Scotiabank Convention Centre on Stanley Ave., near Dunn St., in Niagara Falls.
The biggest headache for most drivers was getting stuck in long lines of traffic just making their way to the centre, and then trying to find a parking spot.
On Saturday afternoon, there were times when cars were backed up on Stanley Ave., all the way to Ferry St., and it wasn’t much better for those coming from the south end at McLeod Rd.

Convention centre game changer
From Niagara This Week:
Described as a critical piece of the pie in terms of attracting people to Niagara, the gleaming new Scotiabank Convention Centre opened in Niagara Falls on Friday to much fanfare.
Years in the making, the new centre across from the old Loretto Academy attracted hundreds of people to the opening celebration.
It’s expected the $100-million building, which received federal and provincial funding as well as funding from local business improvement areas and the private sector, will become an institution that generations of people will use for graduation ceremonies, proms, weddings, and business meetings.
It’s also expected that the convention centre will have a huge economic impact: it’s already created 70 full-time and 210 part-time jobs, and it’s projected that it will generate $83 million worth of new visitor expenditures in the region annually.
If those projections hold true, it will practically pay for itself in a little over a year.
