Casino’s future will be clearer Friday

From Niagara This Week:

The future of one of Niagara’s two casinos will become clearer Friday.

The fate of Casino Niagara, which first opened its doors in 1996, will be announced at a news conference at 1 p.m. at the facility, said Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor on Tuesday.
Closing Casino Niagara was one of the 362 recommendations made in the Drummond Report released late last month. The report was commissioned by the province to look at ways it could eliminate its $16-billion deficit. The casino’s future was muddied further after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) released a report detailing its plans to revitalize the province’s gaming industry. Although Casino Niagara was not named, the report talked about consolidating underperforming facilities, including casinos and slots facilities. The report also called for the establishment of a casino in Toronto.

Craitor said he has met with Finance Minister Dwight Duncan “a number of times” over not only the casinos but gaming issues in Niagara as a whole.

Closing casino Niagara comes with a hefty price

From the Niagara Falls Review:

If the Liberal government decides to close Casino Niagara, it will likely cost them tens of millions of dollars.

Canadian Niagara Hotels, which owns the building Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation leases for the original Niagara Falls casino, said Thursday the 15-year lease extension signed in 2010 has no early-exit clause.

That means if Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty decides to shutter Casino Niagara, which opened in 1996, the government will still have to pay out the full cost of the lease, which expires in 2025.

Toronto casino would be ‘totally inappropriate’: Craitor

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Is it just hogwash from hogtown?

Only time will tell.

Recent media reports out of Toronto that Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. plans to recommend a casino be built in Toronto have some Niagara Falls businesspeople and politicians nervous.

Provincial government officials insist the 2005 moratorium it placed on building new casinos has not been lifted.

In an e-mail response to The Niagara Falls Review Tuesday, a spokesperson for Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan said the minister will not “speculate” whether or not Queen’s Park will alter its moratorium stance until it sees OLG’s report on the future of gaming in the province.

Pacino at the casino: ‘Cool … very cool’

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It wasn’t a concert. It wasn’t a comedy show. It wasn’t really a performance. No, it was exactly what the posters promised: An evening with Al Pacino at the casino.

And for a thousand-or-so of the film legend’s fans, that was all they needed Thursday night.

“Cool … very cool,” said the 71-year-old Oscar winner after he was greeted by a standing ovation. “I think I’m gonna have to go now!”
