Niagara’s 50 great experiences
Note: This isn’t just about Niagara Falls. It mentions some things to do in Niagara Falls, and the entire Niagara Region.
From the Toronto Sun:
There are many reasons why Niagara is a great place to live.
Plenty to see, plenty to do.
And while the region offers stand-out wonders that attract thousands, if not millions, of tourists each year, it’s the hidden gems and historic hearts of the municipalities that truly make Niagara special.
It was quite the task to narrow down a list to only 50 places, “things” and community staples that make the region its uniquely-wonderful self.
Here’s the list, in alphabetical order, of things and places that help make Niagara pop.

Giving a Jet Boat ride to the world
From the Buffalo News:
The future of one of the most famous boat rides in the world is very much in doubt as the Maid of the Mist teeters on the edge of extinction.
But those who operate that “other” boat attraction on the lower Niagara River say their future is looking brighter — and not just because a mild winter means an early start to the season.
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours will celebrate its 20th anniversary this summer amid increasing popularity, especially on the U.S. side of the border.
The attraction appears to be on the cusp of a change in how international tourism dollars are being spent, with Canada not necessarily the first choice anymore for visitors to Niagara Falls. Jet Boat owner John Kinney said he is taking full advantage of this, traveling around the globe selling his attraction to tour operators and promoting the region.

Maid of the Mist docks on U.S. side doesn’t appear ‘viable’
From the Tonawanda News:
The Maid of the Mist’s idea to build a new boat storage facility on the American side of the Falls received a less-than-favorable review from a top state parks official on Monday.
In response to questions posed during a meeting with his board of commissioners, Western Region State Parks Director Mark Thomas said the Maid’s new construction plan may be too complex to pull off in a reasonable timeframe.
“We do not believe that’s a viable alternative,” Thomas told commissioners during a meeting in the administrative offices at Niagara Falls State Park.

Old power plant site eyed for Maid of Mist storage
From the Buffalo News:
Maid of the Mist officials intend to keep their American tour boat operation afloat by building a storage facility on the site of the former Schoellkopf Power Plant near the falls.
But state officials, pointing to red tape, environmental hurdles and timing, have not warmed to the idea.
The plan, company officials said Thursday, is to build steel carriages to store boats during the icy winter months. For more than a century, the company has depended on Canadian storage land it will lose in 2014, and officials hope the plan will help the company survive without Canadian tours.
“We’re going to not stop, we’re going to keep going until we resolve this issue,” Christopher M. Glynn, president of Maid of the Mist Steamboat Co., said at a Thursday news conference. “It is our intent to operate for a long period of time.”

Jet Boat season starts early
From Niagara This Week:
It’s not only the plants and flowers that are getting a head start on the season.
A mild winter and even balmier spring means an early start to the season for the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours.
The boats are scheduled to take to the water on April 19, one of the company’s earliest season starts ever.
The April 19 date is almost two weeks ahead of the average start time for the tour season.

Safari Niagara in August 2011 (pictures and videos)
I commented the other day that we hadn’t been to Marineland the previous few years. One of the reasons is that we were going to Safari Niagara instead. The kids love seeing the animals, and the play park and splash pad are fantastic. We probably went 7 or 8 times last year.
I took some pictures of our visit last August. Most of the pictures are of the bird show, but there are a few others. As always, you can see some of the thumbnails below, and you can see the rest of the thumbnails and the larger images in the Safari Niagara in August 2011 gallery.
As a side note, the Niagara Falls Image Gallery now has 3399 images in 265 categories.
I also took a couple of videos. The first one is of the Birds of Prey show. You can see a few of the birds, including one that is “hunting”. You can watch this HD video on YouTube or see it below.

The other video I took is very short, but super cute. It is of a baby Siamang Gibbon hanging off it’s mother and sucking on her thumb. You really need to check it out. You can watch this short HT video on YouTube or see it below:
