Parks Commission needs more time for boat tour lease decision

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It has had more than 11 months to pick a winner, but the Niagara Parks Commission says its evaluation team needs more time.

More than a year and a half after a long-term operator for boat tours at the base of the Horseshoe Falls was originally supposed to be found, NPC officials said Thursday the team making the decision needs another “five or six weeks,” before announcing a winning bidder.

The deal will be worth a minimum of $5.5 million per year, not including the commission’s share of annual revenue from ticket and souvenir sales.

Chairwoman Janice Thomson had said she expected to announce who would be awarded a 25-year lease to operate boat tours near the falls by the end of 2011, but she told The Niagara Falls Review the complex process to select a winner is still underway.

Attractions open doors for a loonie to help charity

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara museums will go loonie later this month with more than a dozen attractions in the Clifton Hill area offering a deep discount on admission prices for local residents.

Niagara Falls residents can visit 14 attractions for $1 on Jan. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The popular $1 Museum Day event will raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Canada. More than $12,000 was raised last year.

The event has been entertaining local residents for the past 24 years.

“It’s become a second-generation event,” said Nancy Clayton, vice-president of the foundation’s Niagara chapter.

“Now, we get people who grew up with the event who are now bringing their own kids.”

From WIVB Channel 4 in Buffalo (including video):

The Niagara Parks Commission is buying more time before it decides who will award a lease to operate the premier attraction at Niagara Falls, the Maid of the Mist boats.

It has taken the commission more than 11 months to mull the matter, but it says it needs another five or six weeks before deciding who will be awarded the 25- year lease to run the boats at the base of the Horseshoe Falls.

Kiska, Marineland’s only Orca/Killer whale, is pregnant?

This was brought to my attention by regular visitor and Marineland fan “D”. I was referred to a news item on the OrcaHome.de web site which claims that Kiska is pregnant, with twins! Wow, if it is true, then the employees at Marineland must be ecstatic. That might also explain why Marineland didn’t fight the court case any further.

After July 2011, Kiska, a 35 year old female orca was separated from 9 year old male Ikaika, as he was dominant towards her. Today their reason of separation is publicly released. Kiska is pregnant with twins!
During September 2011, Kiska had an ultrasound. It is confirmed she is pregnant by Ikaika and is 4 months in the pregnancy. This was very exciting news for the employees of MarineLand…

Kiska will stay at MarineLand. She is due in October-December 2012, as the orca gestination period is 16-18 months. Her calves are both healthy and it’s a female and male, as said by MarineLand vets.

Remember, this is just a rumour, and Marineland is notoriously secretive about their animals. It might not be true.

Christmas window art

A few years ago, it seemed that almost every store/attraction/restaurant in the Clifton Hill/Victoria Avenue area had Christmas-themed window paintings. I’m not sure what has happened, but this year and last year I think it was only the Ripley’s properties that did the paintings.
