Investigating who owned the falls
From the Buffalo News:
Once, when Jane A. Porter was visiting Europe in the late 19th century, someone asked her if she had ever seen Niagara Falls.
“Seen them?” she allegedly replied. “Why, I own them.”
She wasn’t kidding.
As an heir to the property bought by her grandfather, Augustus Porter, Jane Porter did indeed own the mighty cataracts—at least until 1885, when the family’s waterfront property was bought by New York State to form the nation’s first state park.
The Porter family’s other land holdings, worth millions of dollars even in 19th century money, were the focus of a series of lengthy court fights in the 1880s and ’90s.
At the end of it all, Jane Porter was declared mentally ill — a “lunatic,” in the terminology of the time — even though it’s far from clear that she was really insane by today’s standards, or indeed by any standards.
She seems to have been done out of her property by a greedy sister and a lawyer who supposedly was on her side but had a blatant conflict of interest.
The story was a sensation at the time, gaining coverage even in the New York Times.
But for a century, it was forgotten until it was unearthed in the basement of the Niagara County Courthouse.

Report: Niagara is family fun
From the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal:
A Philadelphia TV reporter called Niagara Falls a great option for parents in need of a good getaway destination for their families.
David Murphy with WPVI brought his family to Niagara County recently. He recommended to travelers coming from the east to utilize Route 18 to get to Niagara Falls: “The final miles into the falls area are especially exciting using this approach, because the road south from the Great Lake (Lake Ontario) parallels the gorge cut by the falls before they receded back to their current position.”

Online reservation booking becomes increasingly popular
From the Buffalo News:
The online booking of tourism reservations continues to grow in popularity, according to the Niagara Tourism&Convention Corp., principal promoter of tourism in Niagara County.
Bookings through the corporation’s Web site ( www.niagara-usa.com ) in June and July amounted to twice as much revenue for local hospitality vendors as did bookings for those same months last year, said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive officer of the corporation. He said 2,547 bookings have been made so far this year through the online reservation system.

Tourism pros shown more to boost in Niagara County
From the Buffalo News:
Among tourist attractions, Niagara County is a lot more than just Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mist.
Other attractions stretch from the vineyards and orchards along the Lake Ontario shore at the north end of the county to the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda at the south end. And there are plenty of things to do along the way.
That is the message that Niagara USA had for about 70 hospitality and tourism employees on two familiarization tours Wednesday across Niagara County.
