Wallenda taking his case to tourism minister
From the Niagara Falls Review:
The Niagara Parks Commission slammed the door on Nik Wallenda Wednesday, but a day later Minister of Tourism Michael Chan opened it up just a bit.
Speaking with the Niagara Falls Review Thursday, the Ontario tourism minister invited Wallenda, a seventh-generation aerialist who wants to walk across the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope, to come and speak with him.
“My door is always open. I welcome the opportunity to meet Mr. Wallenda,” said Chan, who confirmed he had nothing to do with the NPC’s decision to reject Wallenda’s proposal. “This particular project is under the watch of many, many people. It has huge interest around the world.”
Asked if he would stand behind the NPC’s ruling, Chan seemed to leave the door open, saying there are big issues at play.
“One of the major factors is economics. These are uncertain economic times. Jobs are important, the economy is important. That’s why, my door is open to listen to people,” he said.

Falls Incline Railway slated for overhaul
From the Niagara Falls Review:
It’s time to stop the decline of the incline.
The Niagara Parks Commission has plans to replace its aging Falls Incline Railway that makes it easier for visitors to go from the Fallsview tourism district down into the park.
The upgrade is the next phase of its Table Rock Redevelopment Project and is intended to enhance the overall guest experience of Niagara.
The announcement was made Friday near the Table Rock Clock Tower close to the incline by Janice Thomson, interim chair of the NPC, and Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor, parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Tourism and Culture.
The projected opening date is March 2013.

BIDDERS REVEALED IN CANADIAN COMPETITION FOR MAID OF THE MIST
From the Niagara Falls Reporter:
The Niagara Falls Reporter’s expose on the secret dealings surrounding the Maid of the Mist boat tour lease at the Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) in Ontario was instrumental in leading the minister of Tourism to order the NPC to put that lease out to bid. Subsequently, most of the NPC commissioners were fired.
The deadline for the bids, or “Responses to the Request for Proposals,” is 3 p.m., Jan. 31. An award will be made sometime this summer…
…Again, exclusively, the Reporter has learned the identity of the bidders:
I don’t know how they find this stuff out, but check it out!

Tourism Minister stops in Niagara for first official visit
From Niagara This Week:
Ontario’s Minister of Tourism and Culture has finally made his first official visit to Niagara.
Michael Chan was named tourism minister in January of this year and recently came under fire from the opposition party for not visiting Niagara Falls — one of Ontario’s largest tourism destinations.
Last month, Tim Hudak, Opposition leader and MPP for Niagara West-Glanbrook, visited Niagara Falls and asked why Chan had yet to do the same after more than 100 days in office.
On Wednesday, that all changed when Chan spent the day visiting sites around Niagara and meeting with important leaders in the tourism industry.

Tourism minister needs a map to find Falls: Hudak
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Ontario Conservative Leader Tim Hudak offered to pick up a map for Liberal Tourism Minister Michael Chan to help the government’s point man for the industry find his way to one of the province’s most popular destinations.
“I just think it’s shocking someone who has the title Minister of Tourism has not bothered to visit Niagara Falls, particularly given the concerns that we have as we head into this tourism season,” Hudak said after meeting local industry representatives Wednesday in Niagara Falls.
