The Niagara Power Project turns 50

From the Buffalo News:

A small army of men and machines moved into Niagara Falls and Lewiston half a century ago to build the $720 million Niagara Power Project that forever changed the face of the lower Niagara River gorge and ignited unending debate over the project itself, the allocation of electricity and the project’s legacy.

As remembered in today’s Buffalo News Niagara Weekend section, Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller flipped a symbolic red-handled switch at 11:35 a.m. on Feb. 10, 1961, that formally put into service the largest water-driven power complex in the free world.

Niagara Parks opens river boat bidding

From Buffalo Business First (the Niagara Falls Review also has a different article):

Want to operate a tour boat from the Canadian shores of the lower Niagara River?

Then, the Niagara Parks Commission wants to hear from you and your company.

The parks commission, Friday afternoon, set a Nov. 24 deadline for any company to bid on tour boat operations. The Maid of the Mist Steamboat Co. has been running tour boats from both the U.S. and Canadian shores of the lower Niagara River for generations and while its U.S. pact runs for more than three decades, it’s Canadian lease has been under fire for the past year.

New stairway into Niagara Gorge planned near Whirlpool Bridge

From the Buffalo News:

A new stairway will descend into the Niagara Gorge from a scenic overlook near the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge under a plan to enhance trails and viewpoints at three points in Niagara Falls and Lewiston.

The new stairs will descend about 300 feet to a second overlook above the lower Niagara River, said Edward Alkiewicz, licensing manager for the New York Power Authority.

“The main focus and feature of this project is to have another spot in the gorge where people can relatively easily — because of the construction of a new trail and stair system—get into the bottom of the gorge,” said Albert J. Nihill, associate landscape architect for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
