Summer 2010 is “over”… was it good?
I know that summer doesn’t officially end in this part of the world until September 21, but in this tourist area it might as well be over. The beginning of September and the passing of Labour Day makrs the beginning of school. That means that family vacations are no more. The weekends might still be busy here, but things are significantly slower during the week.
So, how as Summer 2010? It’s hard to get a good read on this. Admittedly, I haven’t contacted anyone who their input (I don’t think they’d give me an honest answer anyway), but my impression was that it was a better year that they’ve had the last couple. Here are a few of my own observations (including some comments I’ve made before):
- There often seemed to be a lot of people around
- There were more US license plates seen
- The weather was fantastic
- Apparently the motorcycle get-together, and the Elvis festival were not big hits
- The new Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville opened and always seems to have a decent number of people in it
- I didn’t go, but it sounds like the party for the opening of the Hart & Huntington tattoo shop was the place to be
Hopefully the last couple of years were the bottom, and with improved business will come even more growth. I assume that the new convention centre will only help…

Parrot heads thrilled by Buffett concert

It was a sea of Hawaiian print fabric and flip flops Tuesday as die hard parrot heads jammed with their idol.
Singer songwriter Jimmy Buffett surprised both tourists and locals alike after he jumped on stage for a lively concert at his Margaritaville Cafe.
The popular entertainer served up eight songs at his namesake restaurant including Cheeseburger in Paradise and, of course, Margaritaville.
Buffett performed with the Barry Fish Band and Coral Reefer Mac McAnally.
Among those in the audience was Mayor Ted Salci, an enthusiastic parrot head.

Some observations about the new Niagara Falls Margaritaville
As I tweeted last week, I stopped by the new Niagara Falls location of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. I walked all through the restaurant to check it out. I haven’t eaten there yet, but here are some observations:
- They did a very nice job fixing up that building.
- It has a definite “island” theme to it. The decorations, wall coverings, and sets all definitely give you a “vacation” feel.
- The stage is smaller than I thought, but still looks like it has everything they need.
- I’ve been told that there are 3 bands playing each day.
- When I was by, there were two guys out on one of the patios playing, with one of them playing a steel drum. I love that sound!
- There are 4 patios of various sizes.
- I saw a girl on stilts making balloon shapes for people.
- The extension of the building that was put on the Fallsview Blvd side is their gift shop.
- There is a nice projector system that shows a very large waterfall
- I’ve been told that their hamburger meal is around $13, where competitors (Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood) is closer to $16
Overall, I’m very, very impressed. It seems to be a much better fit that the Wolfgang Puck restaurant.
As of now, the only negative thing I’d say, is that you can’t see inside the restaurant at all from the outside. That seems like a shame. You can’t really see at all how cool it is until you walk in. That seems to be a mistake as they miss quite a bit of walking traffic if people aren’t familiar with the restaurant chain.
I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to go and eat there, but I’m looking forward to it.

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, the Newest Niagara Falls Restaurant, Opens Friday, June 18 on Fallsview Boulevard

Margaritaville Canada Ltd. announced today that the much anticipated grand opening of their first Canadian restaurant in Niagara Falls, Ontario was greeted by thousands of adoring fans of the popular escapist dining concept. “We’re extremely excited to open our first Canadian location just in time for the summer season in this magnificent landmark destination,” said George Davidson, President and CEO of Margaritaville Canada. “We hope that our Margaritaville Cafe will become a ‘must see’ experience for both locals as well as tourists visiting the Niagara region.”

‘You never know when Jimmy’s going to stop by’
From Niagara This Week:
Now that the warm weather has officially arrived, it’s time for patio season and soon visitors and residents of Niagara Falls will be able to enjoy cold beverages on the porch of indecision.
Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is set to open its doors on Friday, June 18. In addition to cold drinks, the franchise restaurant fronted by musician and businessman will be serving up cheeseburgers in paradise, volcano nachos and lots of live entertainment.
The Fallsview Boulevard location features a full stage, and Leanne Leach, sales and marketing manager for the restaurant, said there will be bands playing every night during the summer. In addition to the live entertainment, there will be stilt walkers making their way through the restaurant to help create a fun island-escapist atmosphere.

Outside of new Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville almost done
It looks like there is still lots of work to do on the inside, but the outside of the new Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville (at the corner of Fallsview Blvd and Murray St) looks almost done. Much of the painting has been done and signs are going up.

Construction progress at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville
There is still a lot of work to do, but it’s quite impressive the amount of work they’ve already done on the old Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant to get it ready to be a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville.

Hundreds line up for Margaritaville job fair

Prospective employees braved long lines and wait times for their chance to serve a cheeseburger in paradise.
Margaritaville Canada Ltd. hosted a job fair at the Niagara College Maid of the Mist campus on Dunn Street from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 8-11. According to vice-president of operations Stephen Deere, the Jimmy Buffett-themed restaurant is looking to fill 280 positions ranging from servers and cooks to retail workers and stilt walkers.
Four hundred people had been interviewed by 1:30 p.m. of the first day, according to Deere, who expects at least 2,000 applicants over the four-day period.

Bigger/better Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville signs
It took forever for the old Wolfgang Puck’s (at the corner of Fallsview Blvd and Murray St) to end up with a new sign saying that Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville was coming. When they finally put one up, it was barely readable. Well, now they’ve put some nice, clean, professional-looking signs up on the scaffolding that is over the sidewalk.
