Sleep Cheap exceeds $1-million mark
From the Niagara Falls Review:
They made it!
The annual Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event raised $175,988 this year, which pushes their eight year history total over the $1-million mark.
Mayor Jim Diodati said when they started this event they had no idea that “it would just grow wings and take off like this. We are very proud of the fact that 100 % of the money goes directly to local Niagara charities.”
The event added a fifth night this year on Sunday, Nov. 13, and organizers were confident they would break the $1-million mark before it wrapped up on Nov. 17.
Twenty-seven hotels offered a record 7,800 room nights to only Niagara region residents as a way of letting them know what’s available and hopefully spreading the word when family and friends visit this area.
“This is one of the benefits we have of living in a tourist town for all the locals,” said Diodati.

TOP 10: No. 4 — Several area hotels get great news in 2011
The Niagara Gazette is going through their list of top 10 stories of the year. I’m sure many of them are working linking to, but I’ll post this one, and then you can follow links on that page to other articles.
The calendar year has been anything but vanilla for the hotel industry in Niagara Falls.
While the area received praise as a most popular tourist destination in two separate national magazines, four hotels either changed ownership or received major renovations in 2011…

Sleep Cheap returns Nov. 13-17
From Niagara This Week:
Sleep Cheap is back for an eighth year with a seven-figure goal in mind.
The fundraising event that gives Niagara residents the opportunity to stay in local hotels at vastly reduced rates with the proceeds going to charity is looking to cross the million-dollar mark this year. More than $845,000 has been raised so far.
“We’re within reach,” said Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, who created the concept in 2004 when he was a city councillor. “To help us get there we’ve added a few things.”
The dates this year are Nov. 13-17, a five-night promotion for the first time ever. In all, 27 hotels will offer 7,800 room nights. The cost of rooms is unchanged: $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a fallsview room, $65 for a whirlpool room, and $85 for a room with access to a waterpark. It is available only to Niagara residents.

Who’s really writing the reviews on TripAdvisor?
This isn’t directly Niagara Falls-related, but it is still interesting. I’m sure some (or all) of the local operations use TripAdvisor and may try to cheat the system.
From The Times Online:
A row has broken out over the reliability of the hotel-review website TripAdvisor, with hoteliers alleging that the market-leading giant is no longer capable of policing its own content.
With 25m user-generated reviews and opinions on more than 490,000 hotels and attractions worldwide, and with more than 11m registered members, the Expedia-owned website has become a hugely powerful marketing tool, with many hotels admitting that the majority of their bookings come either directly or indirectly via the site.
But in the current grim economic climate, with businesses fighting harder than ever for a share of the dwindling market, a dirty war has broken out with hotels and restaurants using the site to attack rivals or boost their own ratings by posting fake reviews.

Falls hotel to get funds for retail, restaurant
From the Buffalo News:
A Canadian hotelier currently refurbishing two Buffalo Avenue hotels will receive $1.1 million in city and state money to bring retail and possibly a chain restaurant to one of them.
Faisal Merani plans to spend $3.8 million to expand the restaurant and retail area of his Holiday Inn at First Street and Buffalo Avenue, near the Rainbow Boulevard roundabout downtown.

Unofficial start of Summer 2011

Yes, Summer doesn’t start until June 21, but this weekend and next weekend are the unofficial start of Summer in the tourist area of Niagara Falls. I would think that generally the industry likes it when Memorial Day and Victoria Day fall on different weekends, like this year.
It doesn’t seem like much was done over the winter that will be noticeable. There are some hotels and restaurants that changed names, but very little construction. Probably the one big one is Dinosaur Adventure Golf. It sure looks like it will open soon. The dinosaurs look amazing. The only drawback is that it will take a couple of years for the plants and trees to mature and give it a nicer “jungle” sort of look.
Based on the people I’ve seen around on the weekends in the last month or so, it seems like this summer could be strong. Let’s hope so!

Sleep Cheap returns to Falls hotels
From Niagara This Week:
Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap is back for its sixth year.
Hotels started taking reservations on Monday for annual promotion that sees Niagara residents getting discounted rooms in Niagara Falls hotels over a four day period.
This year, Sleep Cheap will be taking place over four nights: Nov. 15 through 18. Niagara residents who are 21 years of age and older can reserve a room at one of 28 participating hotels. City councillor and current mayoral candidate Jim Diodati organized this event six years ago and said each year it has been growing steadily.“It’s great to see it grow every year,” he said.

Phil’s Blog: The Hotels I stayed in Page III
Someone with a Blogger blog has posted about some hotels he’s stayed in, including several in Niagara Falls:
In 1994, my Grandfather decided to stay on the Canadian Side for a weekend excursion the the USA because of the Canadian Dollare was falling. There are two Days inn hotels in Niagara Falls, This hotel is located on Victoria Ave. The hotel room was across the hall from the elevator and it featured floor to ceiling windows. During this trip I went to Smokin Joes to get gas, and shopping on Military Road.
