NPC conducted ‘inappropriate, unacceptable’ actions: Auditors

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Two provincial audits into the Niagara Parks Commission concluded “some of the actions taken by former staff were inappropriate and unacceptable.”

The audits, conducted during the past several months by the Ministry of Finance and publicly released Friday, look into past executive expenses, procurement practices and revenue generating opportunities at the parks commission.

The provincial agency has had to deal with revelations of extravagant spending by a former executive, as well as questions about how it awards contracts to buy goods, services and other practices.

“We conclude that for the expense areas reviewed, in a significant number of instances, the NPC was not in compliance with the (Management Board of Cabinet) travel, meal and hospitality expenses directive,” states one of the audit reports.

The Niagara Falls Review also has the entire report available for you to read.

Opening set N.F., Ont. convention center

From Buffalo Business First:

Just a few days before the grand opening of the Scotiabank Convention Centre, Kerry Painter is able to finally get rid of her hard hat and steel-toed shoes as she walks around the building.

The 288,000-square-foot Niagara Falls, Ont. convention center is that close to opening.

Crews inside and outside the Stanley Avenue facility are spending the final days before the center’s official debut Friday afternoon focusing less on bricks-and-mortar issues and more on putting the final touches on the $100 million building that many believe will be a critical piece of Niagara Falls’ tourism and hospitality business.

Online reservation booking becomes increasingly popular

From the Buffalo News:

The online booking of tourism reservations continues to grow in popularity, according to the Niagara Tourism&Convention Corp., principal promoter of tourism in Niagara County.

Bookings through the corporation’s Web site ( www.niagara-usa.com ) in June and July amounted to twice as much revenue for local hospitality vendors as did bookings for those same months last year, said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive officer of the corporation. He said 2,547 bookings have been made so far this year through the online reservation system.
