Seven plans offered for Falls site

The city whose reputation as a honeymoon capital is often overshadowed by its reputation for urban decay is poised to get its first major downtown development — outside of the Seneca Niagara Casino — in some 30 years.
City and state officials have confirmed that seven developers submitted proposals for a 38,000-square-foot site at 310 Rainbow Blvd.
While details of the specific plans were not released, officials said they would like to see a mixed-use building rise on the site to fill the unmet downtown demand for retail, food, beverage, residential and hotel space around the falls.

Niagara Falls draws Indian tourists and businesses

Niagara Falls, like most Rust Belt cities, has fallen on hard times. Even its tourist attraction, which once made it America’s honeymoon capital, has not saved it from economic woes. But there seems to be hope in Niagara Falls, thanks to a rising current of East Indian tourists. East Indians are visiting the falls by the bus load—many after flying thousands of miles—and new businesses are opening up on nearly every street corner.

Ontario tourism minister didn’t force people-mover deal on Parks Commission: Niagara Falls MPP

A pending deal between the City of Niagara Falls and the Niagara Parks Commission to create a new people-mover bus system to service the millions of visitors to the Honeymoon Capital each year was no shotgun wedding.
While Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor acknowledges he and Ontario Tourism Minister Michael Chan were asked to help resolve an impasse in negotiations between the parties in recent weeks, the minister did not force a deal on the provincial agency, whose chairwoman Fay Booker continues to raise concerns about the impact the new system could have on Niagara Parks’ revenue stream.
“No – I don’t think that’s true,” said Craitor, when asked if the ministry put pressure on Booker and the commission to get the deal done.

Don’t read too much into this ‘royal snub’

Was last week’s Royal Snub really a wake-up call for Niagara Falls? Or is there an easier explanation for why Prince William and Kate Middleton passed over the Honeymoon Capital on what will be their first international tour after their April 29 royal wedding?
You could sense the disappointment in Niagara Falls when their itinerary was announced and it didn’t include “the world’s most famous address.” Mayor Jim Diodati, city council and even former mayor Ted Salci eagerly put the city’s line in the water, hoping to lure Wills and Kate to Niagara Falls.
But the future king and queen will go to Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ottawa instead.
Right away, some Review readers posted on Facebook that Niagara Falls got snubbed because it has developed a reputation as a tacky “overpriced tourist trap.”

Wills and Kate won’t do Niagara? Pity.
The future king of Canada and his new bride appear to be passing over Niagara on their summer tour of Canada.
When Prince William and Catherine Middleton come to Canada in June, their itinerary will include Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and the Ottawa area.
But not Niagara, despite city hall’s attempt to lure them here.
Still, Mayor Jim Diodati hopes the royal couple might find time to squeeze in an “unofficial” visit to the Honeymoon Capital amid the activities on their official itinerary.
“Do they have any personal time in there?” Diodati asked. “If I was taking a romantic getaway with my new bride, I don’t think it would be part of my press release.”

Niagara Falls is Western New York and southern Ontario’s natural tourist attraction. But the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario has its mind set on two tourists in particular; England’s future King and Queen, Prince William and his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton. After their spring wedding they’re planning a trip to Canada.
“We couldn’t think of a more natural place than the honeymoon capital of the world to make a trip,” said Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati.

The Honeymoon Capital wants to roll out the red carpet for Prince William and Kate Middleton after they tie the knot in April.
Niagara Falls city hall plans to send a follow-up invitation to one it sent to the future king in December now that it appears certain the newlyweds will honeymoon in Canada, says Mayor Jim Diodati.
“I can’t imagine they would come here on their honeymoon and not come to… the Honeymoon Capital,” the mayor said during Monday’s council meeting, the same day a British paper reported Canada will be the destination of newlyweds’ first international trip.

Tourism looking up

The Honeymoon Capital is having a better tourism season this year than last, despite the continuing difficulties convincing Americans to take their holidays north of the border, says the president of Niagara Falls Tourism.
“We’re holding our own,” said Wayne Thomson.
“Fortunately, there are enough Ontarians, people from Quebec and other parts of Canada who are offsetting what would be a dismal year otherwise.”
Thomson said so far this year the majority of operators are reporting increased business compared to last summer when both Canada and the United States were smack dab in the middle of one of the worst recessions in decades.
“This last long weekend was exceptional,” said Thomson.

Bring GO to Niagara Falls, says Region

Regional council has asked GO Transit to find a way to extend daily train service to Niagara Falls.
Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of GO Transit, is studying a possible expansion of the popular commuter service into Niagara.
GO is looking at four different expansion routes, including one that follows the northern peninsula CN rail line all the way to Niagara Falls.
But GO officials have said that route may require a costly bridge over — or tunnel under — the Welland Canal to avoid ship traffic. GO is also considering an option that would see the train stop in St. Catharines, with travelers boarding buses to continue to the Honeymoon Capital.
But at Thursday’s meeting, regional council approved a staff recommendation to push for train service all the way to Niagara Falls — and beyond, possibly to Fort Erie.
