Falls important for Ontario tourism: Minister

From the Niagara Falls Review:

As Michael Chan met with several of Niagara’s tourism officials this week, he said one thing became abundantly clear.

“I think the Niagara region is in a really good position moving forward. I’m very hopeful for the future of tourism in the area,” Ontario’s tourism minister told The Niagara Falls Review during his day-long tour of the peninsula Wednesday.

While mayors, economic development officers and others with a stake in the local industry continue to raise concerns about the economy, currency exchange fluctuations and border-related challenges, bright lights can be seen on the horizon, Chan said.

Construction of the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre in Niagara Falls, a motor speedway proposal in Fort Erie and the formation of a regional tourism organization will put the area in good stead come the future, he said.

Fort Erie mayor researching speedway impact in Virginia

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Mayor Doug Martin is heading to Virginia next weekend to see what impact, if any, the Richmond International Raceway has had on the community.

While thousands of motor heads will be cheering their favourite driver during the May 1 Crown Royal Heath Calhoun 400, part of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, Martin and a handful of town and regional officials will meet with municipal staff and Richmond’s mayor on how to mitigate resident concerns about noise, pollution and traffic congestion.

NASCAR mum on Fort Erie track plans

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The U. S.-based auto racing giant NASCAR says it is not in the business of building race tracks -and unless one has already been built, don’t bother asking how it might get involved.

Asked about the possibility of the organization expanding into Canada or being involved in some way with a proposal being considered in Fort Erie, a NASCAR representative in Florida referred all questions to their legal department

“NASCAR does not build race tracks. After a track is built, then (owners) would apply for a sanction for a race. So, until something is built, there is no way to know,” said a representative from its legal department.

“Once the track applies for a sanction, it’s at that point when NASCAR would decide.”

Fort Erie speedway clears another hurdle

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Canadian Motor Speedway proposal completed another lap toward the finish line Wednesday.

The regional planning committee supported an amendment application to its policy plan, allowing the multi-million-dollar project to move ahead through what could be an arduous approval process.

The endorsement, however, didn’t come with a blank cheque. It is subject to conditions, such as limiting the type and scale of ancillary uses on the subject land, further studies and local control over the future zoning bylaw.

The decision followed closely on the heels of Fort Erie council unanimously authorizing an amendment to its official plan Monday.

Fort Erie council endorses speedway proposal

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Fort Erie council unanimously authorized an amendment to its official plan Monday night, essentially endorsing the Canadian Motor Speedway proposal. A bylaw will go before town council next Monday night.

The issue will also need approval from Niagara Region, and must meet other requirements from the provincial government.

Close to 60 people took to the podium to voice their support or opposition to the proposal during a town council meeting last night.

Normally, council meetings are held inside town hall. But with a packed house expected for such a hot-button issue, the larger Leisureplex banquet hall was required.

Hundreds packed the venue, while 57 people registered to speak.

The meeting began at 6 p.m. and finished at 12:50 a.m.

Group wants town to put the brakes on speedway project in Fort Erie

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A group of Niagara residents have raised the caution flag over the proposed Fort Erie motor speedway project.

A grass-roots organization, known as CARS (Citizens Against Racing Speedway) warns the proposal will not be an economic windfall for the town, rather it will be its “worst nightmare.”

The town and the Regional Municipality of Niagara is currently looking at an application to build a NASCAR-style speedway on an 800 acre site near the Queen Elizabeth Way between Gilmore and Bowen Roads.

The auto racing complex proposal put forward by an investment group includes grandstand seating for up to 100,000 people, an oval track and road course and other developments including a research and development centre overseen by McMaster University.

CARS, which formed a few months ago after the town held a meeting to discuss the proposal, says the development would have a detrimental impact on the area.
