Setting up for Winter Festival of Lights 2011/2012
Over the last couple of days the workers have been out in Queen Victoria Park setting up some of the displays for the Niagara Falls CAA Winter Festival of Lights. On the one hand, it seems a bit early. On the other hand, it is much better for the workers to be out in this weather, then cold/bitter weather in November/December. The festival opens on November 7th, so they have just over a month to setup.

It started as a way to keep up with our American competition.
Now, nearly three decades later, the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights has no competition.
When rumblings of a winter lights festival first started in 1982, organizers watched what was happening across the border with envy. Established two years earlier, the Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, N.Y., was an immediate hit, attracting 250,000 people during its first year. It was one of the rare times our American counterpart got the tourism jump on us.

CAA Winter Niagara Festival of Lights & Winter Events Illuminate Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls welcomes the winter season with Canada’s largest illumination festival, the CAA Winter Niagara Festival of Lights. Running until January 31, 2011, the Niagara festival captures the magic of the holiday season turning Niagara Falls into a winter wonderland with over three million sparkling lights along a 5 km route. And on Friday nights in December, visitors can enjoy spectacular fireworks, including an extravaganza on New Year’s Eve. Other unique Niagara Falls events taking place during the festival include a Santa’s Village Candlelight Stroll and the popular TD Rink at the Brink.

Rink at the Brink gets go ahead to promote partnership with TD
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Rink at the Brink will be allowed to promote its financial sponsorship with Toronto Dominion bank when the outdoor ice surface near the Horseshoe Falls opens next week.
During a special meeting Friday morning, Niagara Parks commissioners approved a request from the Winter Festival of Lights for permission to erect temporary signs bearing the TD/Rink at the Brink logo.
During a meeting earlier in the week, some commissioners expressed concerns about setting a precedent by allowing third-party corporate signs on NPC property for an extended period of time.

Holiday lights to shine bright

For the last six years, the United Way has been trying to re-create the theme of the old Festival of Lights, and this year’s re-creation promises to be the most extensive yet.

Signage could be a kink for Rink at the Brink

Niagara Parks commissioners may be about to throw a kink in plans for the Rink at the Brink.
On Monday, commissioners voiced their concerns about a request from the Winter Festival of Lights to erect signs and banners near the outdoor rink near Table Rock promoting the Toronto Dominion bank as this year’s title sponsor.
With less than two weeks until opening day, commissioners, who expressed concerns about setting a precedent opening the NPC up to criticism, put the request on hold pending receipt of additional information from parks staff .

Pictures from Winter Festival of Lights (2010/2011) Opening Ceremonies
Last Saturday I went to the opening of ceremonies for the CAA Winter Festival of Lights. It is the first time I’ve ever been. I spoke to my wife about it earlier in the week, and we thought our kids would enjoy seeing Mickey and Minnie Mouse, as well as Greg Frewin, so we made the trek down. The ceremony was about an hour long. It doesn’t sound that long, but for the kids, it was an eternity. They enjoyed some of the songs and dancers, but they certainly didn’t understand why there were people standing at the podium every few minutes speaking for a minute. Ultimately they really enjoyed themselves. My sons were thrilled by the fireworks, but my daughter didn’t look at them at all as she couldn’t stop looking at the Disney Princess display

One million expected for Niagara festival

It’s Canada’s largest illuminated lights festival, with more than three million tree and ground lights twinkling in the Winter Wonderland. It features not only the world’s largest Canadian-American flag but also Canada’s largest illuminated menorah. This year, the more than 120 illuminated and animated light displays that make up Niagara Falls CAA Winter Festival of Lights are expected to draw as many as one million visitors.

Mickey set to flip the switch

The leaves have fallen, the pumpkins are gone and the Christmas decorations are out of storage.
But around Niagara Falls, the season doesn’t formally start until Mickey Mouse says so.
The Disney icon will once again flip the switch Saturday night at Queen Victoria Park to get the 28th CAA Winter Festival of Lights underway. In a flash, more than 125 displays and three million lights will dazzle the city, making it one of North America’s largest lights festivals.
“It kind of officially turns the city into winter mode,” says festival general manager Dino Fazio. “It certainly drives a lot of overnight tourism (this weekend) … that’s when we start to see people showing up.
“They’ll come on a regular basis. There are those that come now but also want to see (the lights) when the snow falls as well.”

Rink at the Brink to Return for 2010-2011 Season
As previously announced, the Rink at the Brink will be back on Niagara Parks Commission land this year. The official press release is available here:
Thousands of visitors to Niagara Falls will once again be able to experience the thrill of skating just steps from the Horseshoe Falls, thanks to the decision taken today by The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) Board.
During its regularly scheduled Commission meeting, the NPC Board voted to rescind their August decision to terminate the agreement between Niagara Parks and Winter Festival of Lights (WFOL) organizers concerning the operation of the Festival’s iconic Rink at the Brink ice skating attraction near Table Rock Complex.
Ongoing meetings among staff members at both organizations have allayed concerns expressed by NPC and have resulted in plans and commitments to alleviate operational concerns and expedite future on-site rehabilitation once the skating season is complete.
