Wallenda to meet with Niagara Parks Commission officials on Thursday
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Nik Wallenda, the American aerialist who wants to walk across the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope, will meet with officials from the Niagara Parks Commission this week.
NPC chairwoman Janice Thomson told The Review on Monday that a meeting has been scheduled for Thursday between Wallenda and NPC senior staff.
The meeting will not be open to the public.
“It is an internal staff meeting,” Thomson said. “I will be there and our general manager and her senior managers who will discuss this project with him (Wallenda).”
Thomson expects the meeting will last at least two hours.

Daredevil still dreams of tightrope walk across Niagara Falls
From CTV.ca:
Canadian officials may have turned him down, but an American man says he’s not ready to give up his dream of walking a tightrope suspended across Niagara Falls.
Nik Wallenda, a stunt artist hailing from seven generations of circus performers, was told by the Niagara Parks Commission late Wednesday that he wouldn’t be allowed to go ahead with his stunt even though U.S. officials provided their permission weeks earlier.
“I’m a little bit disheartened,” Wallenda told The Canadian Press from his house in Saratosa, Fla. “But it’s another page in the book and I’ll continue to pursue it.”

Canada nixes Wallenda’s Niagara rope walk
From UPI:
Canadian officials in Niagara Falls have denied daredevil Nik Wallenda’s application to walk across the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope next summer.
Wednesday night, the Niagara Parks Commission voted to deny a permit for the stunt, planned for June, the Toronto Star reported.
The plan was for Wallenda to cross from Goat Island, which separates the U.S. falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, 1,800 feet across the gorge, on a 2-inch-wide steel cable to the Canadian side.
Parks Commissioner Janice Thomson told the Star there are safety concerns as well as a fear it would spur unauthorized copycat stunts. She said the event also didn’t fit with long-term planning for the park region.

Wallenda denied
From Niagara This Week:
The Niagara Parks Commission has denied Nik Wallenda’s proposal for a tightrope walk across the Niagara gorge.
In a long-awaited decision comes three weeks after the famed daredevil made a personal pitch to the agency, which is in charge of managing provincial parks around the Horseshoe Falls.
In a news release issued late Wednesday, hours after a decision was expected, the commission said it gave the proposal careful consideration and made the decision based on its “mandate, priorities and long-term goals.”

Crossing Niagara, the return journey
From The Independent (in the UK):
It takes a cool head, impeccable balance, and plenty of self-confidence to walk unaided across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Unfortunately, for daredevil Nik Wallenda, it also requires formal permission from local bureaucrats.
The 32-year-old circus performer is bidding to become the first person in more than a century to perform the high-wire stunt, reviving a tradition of derring-do which stretches back to the destination’s golden era. But first, he needs a rubber stamp from Canada’s Niagara Parks Commission.
The article also has a nice history of the various daredevils over the years.
