Minister of State Moore Greets Chinese Tourism Officials in Niagara Falls

The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), along with Dean Allison, Member of Parliament for Niagara West–Glanbrook, today greeted officials from the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) during their visit to Niagara Falls, Ontario.
“I am thrilled to welcome the Chinese delegation to Canada,” said Minister of State Moore. “I am also glad to be able to show them some of what makes Canada a wonderful destination for our Chinese friends.”
While meeting with the CNTA delegates, the Minister of State spoke about the importance of the arrival of the first official tour groups from China last week.
“With last week’s arrival of over 350 Chinese leisure travellers, Canadian tourism has taken a step forward in terms of competing on the world stage,” noted Minister of State Moore.

For years, you could count on the Shrine Circus coming to the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena every summer.
But with the arena closing this summer, there’s a new circus in town. It doesn’t need bears or elephants to thrill a crowd.
Returning to the Niagara Fallsview Casino for the third straight year, Le Grand Cirque is becoming an annual dose of thrills and chills, minus any animals. Call it the changing of the guard, says creative producer Simon Painter.
“It’s a very slick production, seamless,” he says. “To have animals in shows nowadays, especially exotic animals, is totally incorrect. I think (our show) is the way the industry’s going.”
Instead of lions, you’ll get contortionists. Instead of bears, you’ll get airborne acrobats. And instead of elephants, you’ll get the show’s signature Wheel of Death — a massive contraption that never fails to leave the crowd dazzled and just a bit frazzled.
Composed of 40 performers gathered from Canada, Russia, Brazil, Mongolia, Europe and China, the show aims to fit as much spectacle into the 1,500- seat Avalon Ballroom as possible.

Niagara Falls is eager to roll out the red carpet to hundreds of thousands of Chinese tourists now that Canada is on the list of places their government will let them go.
People working at Niagara Parks Commission attractions are going to learn when someone pretends to wash their hands in front of them, it means they’re looking for a washroom. When they make a motion with their right hand like they’re scooping something from their cupped left, they’re hungry. And restaurant servers shouldn’t raise their eyebrows if a Chinese tourist asks for nothing but hot water.
“We know that when they come here, they expect to be treated like VIPs and we’re happy to do that. They love photo-ops. They love to have pictures taken,” said Katherine Fisher, the parks commission’s corporate training manager.
Now that China has announced Canada will be granted Approved Destination Status, tourism operators should be bracing for an influx of travellers from the world’s most populous country, she said.
“That’s huge for us.”

China makes it easier for citizens to visit Canada

China has granted Canada a new designation that will make it easier for Chinese travellers to visit this country, a move Niagara’s tourism industry has been eagerly anticipating for years.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Thursday Canada has been given Approved Destination Status. Harper made the announcement in Beijing following his meeting the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabo.
In 2008, 159,000 Chinese travellers came to Canada, an increase of 5.3 per cent over the previous year, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
It’s a tiny fraction of the 1.3 billion people in China, the world’s most populous country.
Tourism operators like the Niagara Parks Commission have been eager to see Canada earn Approved Destination Status because opens Canada’s door to more travellers.
