New manager by June, predicts NPC chairwoman

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It could be summer before the Niagara Parks Commission gets a new manager at the helm as the government agency begins the process to fill the shoes of its retired boss John Kernahan.

“I’m going to suggest the search process is going to take three or four months,” chairwoman Fay Booker said in an interview. “It can be into June before we have our person on site. That would be a guess of mine.”

NPC looking for ‘honesty’

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Pinocchio need not apply to the Niagara Parks Commission.

Honesty, integrity and independence have been added as qualifications expected of future commissioners as the Ontario government prepares to fill six vacancies on the agency responsible for running the public parks and attractions along the Niagara River.

Chairwoman Fay Booker said it was her “suggestion” to add the new criteria to improve the wording in previous ads.

“There was some tweaking of it again this time around. Every time we do it, there’s some more tweaking,” she said.

Parks Commission faces uphill task to educate visitors about Niagara

From Bullet Media:

Niagara Falls may be one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, but many visitors, even those from this country, just want to take a fast look at the water, buy some icewine, and head down the QEW to Toronto.

And that’s a serious problem, says Niagara Parks Commission Chairwoman Fay Booker.

“We have to do a much better job of educating people in our prospective markets,” she said during a Parks Commission meeting Wednesday morning. “We have to tell people there is so much more to do here. We have to keep them here longer.”

Booker ‘rattled’ by attack on credibility

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Fay Booker says she’s “rattled” and disturbed by what she calls attempts to undermine her credibility as chairwoman of the Niagara Parks Commission at a time Ontario’s Liberal government is looking to her to fix historic problems and lead the agency in a new direction.

She tackled head-on an anonymous e-mail sent to The Review suggesting she helped a friend get a contract as project manager with the commission, helped her former accounting firm secure a contract as its auditor and doubled the pay commissioners get.

“I’ve never had my credibility undermined like this,” she said Wednesday. She is in Calgary on a teaching contract. She didn’t have time to cancel before Tourism Minister Michael Chan shook up the parks commission Monday by turfing one-third of its members.

“What I’ve come to realize is we’ve got to resolve the past before we can address the future,” Booker said.

More management changes coming at NPC, chairwoman says

From the Niagara Falls Review:

More changes in senior management are coming up at the Niagara Parks Commission where two of its nine directors have left recently, says chairwoman Fay Booker.

The sudden departure of revenue, marketing and business development director Joel Noden Tuesday and the planned retirement of engineer Nick Murphy mean there are two vacancies in the upper echelon of the provincial agency that manages public land along the Niagara River.

Parks Commission regrouping

From Niagara This Week:

Niagara Parks Commission Chairwoman Fay Booker has no immediate plans to replace departed Parks executive Joel Noden – at least not until the provincial agency goes through an extensive strategic planning process.

“We’ll have to see,” Booker said Tuesday. “This isn’t our busiest time of the year. We’re coming into some down-time now, so this gives us the opportunity to take a step back, to look at everything and see how it’s best for us to proceed.”
