Convention centre game changer

From Niagara This Week:

Described as a critical piece of the pie in terms of attracting people to Niagara, the gleaming new Scotiabank Convention Centre opened in Niagara Falls on Friday to much fanfare.

Years in the making, the new centre across from the old Loretto Academy attracted hundreds of people to the opening celebration.

It’s expected the $100-million building, which received federal and provincial funding as well as funding from local business improvement areas and the private sector, will become an institution that generations of people will use for graduation ceremonies, proms, weddings, and business meetings.

It’s also expected that the convention centre will have a huge economic impact: it’s already created 70 full-time and 210 part-time jobs, and it’s projected that it will generate $83 million worth of new visitor expenditures in the region annually.

If those projections hold true, it will practically pay for itself in a little over a year.

Fallsview Casino celebrates Chinese New Year

From CANOE Travel:

When he gets back to Australia, Daniel Whin will be able to tell all his friends about how the Chinese celebrate the new year.

He was sitting in the restaurant at the Fallsview Casino on Thursday afternoon when he heard some loud drums and decided to see what all the excitement was about.

In the lobby, five lions and 16 performers were taking part in the traditional Lion Dance parade in celebration of the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit.

“This was really nice and I got some great photos,” said Whin, who spent two days in Canada and was heading to New York City later in the day.

Olympic take on Oh Canada Eh

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Thought the Olympics closing ceremonies looked familiar? If you’ve seen the Oh Canada Eh dinner show in Niagara Falls, you weren’t imagining things.

From the moose to the lumberjacks to the hockey players, the cheeky celebration of all things Canadiana was like a carbon copy of the award-winning show that has been tickling tourists since 1994.

“Anne of Green Gables was the only thing missing in their performance that’s in ours,” said an amused Oh Canada Eh vice-president Anne Robinson…

Robinson had so much deja vu watching the closing ceremonies, she wondered if the Olympic producers took in a show or two of Oh Canada Eh at some point.
