Rainforest Cafe threatens suit against animal advocates
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Canadian Niagara Hotels has threatened a local animal advocacy group with legal action if it doesn’t remove online postings claiming mistreatment of animals at the Rainforest Cafe.
Last month, Marineland Animal Defense (MAD) posted on its website and Facebook page that an employee at the Clifton Hill theme restaurant said a number of fish had been removed from a 5,500-gallon aquarium after a crack had formed in a tank.
According to MAD, a local group that advocates for the end of animal captivity at Marineland, several horse-eye jack fish died during the transfer process and a white-tip reef shark was being housed in a pool that is inadequate for the animal.
The Niagara Falls Humane Society inspected the facility Jan. 3 and deemed the temporary housing met the standards of the Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act as well as the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
“It’s not my intent to get into a debate with the principals of that association, but I wanted to be on record that we’re dealing with these animals very responsibly,” Doug Birrell, president of Canadian Niagara Hotels, said of the group’s claims.

Windows by Jamie Kennedy restaurant

Last year it was announced that famous chef Jamie Kennedy was going to be starting a restaurant that is part of the Canadian Niagara Hotels property. Windows by Jamie Kennedy – Niagara Falls now has a web site. There are short bios of Jamie Kennedy (responsible for the food) and Tony Aspler (responsible for the wine) as well as a very professionally done video talking about the restaurant. It’s worth a look.
The site also says the restaurant will be opening in February 2012.

New signs by Rainforest Cafe
The plaza in front of Rainforest Cafe on Clifton Hill still doesn’t look that great. The old WWE building is still there with WWE signs. Well, Canadian Niagara Hotels had some of the signs replaced the other day.

Niagara Falls Based Hotel Company To Purchase One of A Kind Muskoka Resort
This isn’t directly Niagara Falls related, but it still ties in. Apparently Canadian Niagara Hotels is venturing beyond the Niagara Falls area.

Fixing the Falls: Downtown still under development
From the Niagara Gazette:
The DiCienzio family has been doing hotel business on both sides of the border in Niagara Falls for years.
In 2007, the family business, Canadian Niagara Hotels, sold the old Holiday Inn at the corner of Third Street and Rainbow Boulevard to make way for its demolition as part of the expansion of the footprint for the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel.
Three years later, the Dicienzios, who own several hotel properties in Niagara Falls, Ontario, returned to the American side with an investment in the former Crowne Plaza Hotel. The Third Street property has since been renovated and re-opened under the Sheraton flagship. Last month, the company opened a TGI Friday’s restaurant inside the hotel on the side facing Old Falls Street.
Michael DiCienzio says favorable Canadian currency rates and other market factors played a role in the family’s decision to invest downtown. He said improvements to the appeal of the area helped as well.
“It’s better since they took out the Wintergarden and developed the Old Falls Street promenade,” DiCienzio said. “You have the anchors at each end with the casino and the park and now everything else can line up in between. It’s absolutely moving in the right direction. There’s no doubt about that.”
