You’ll find a steady stream of family fun at Niagara Falls
From Cleveland.com:
Spectacular natural beauty. Gloriously tacky man-made fun. Niagara Falls is overflowing with both.
We experienced the dual sides of the falls on a long family weekend excursion to Canada to see the holiday lights — and then some. And we loved most of it, especially our 4-year-old. So if you decide to head north for a bit of seasonal sightseeing, here are some of our favorites beyond the bright lights and big falls.

Some Wallenda posts today
I know I’m behind, but I still wanted to post some articles about Nik Wallenda and his attempts to get approval to walk on a wire over Niagara Falls.
The rest of the posts today and at least one tomorrow will be on his recent trip to Niagara Falls Ontario to present to the Niagara Parks Commission.
Wirewalker to make pitch on Falls crossing
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Nik Wallenda is used to wowing people. Now he hopes he’s able to wow the Niagara Parks Commission.
Wallenda will have his chance in two weeks to finally convince Niagara Parks commissioners his proposal to walk on a tightrope across the Horseshoe Falls between Canada and the United States is the work of an experienced and talented performer, not that of a thrill-seeking stuntman.
The Florida wire walker submitted his request online to speak before the commission, a request interim chairwoman Janice Thomson granted for the Nov. 16 meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. at Legends golf course.
“Separately, (Wallenda) sent me a letter with some of the details of how he would propose to do this walk,” said Thomson.

It’s time to go Over the falls
From Niagara This Week:
…And speaking of Clifton Hill, that is one of the reasons I am loving covering the Niagara Falls. Ever since growing up as a kid in Dundas, family trips to Niagara Falls and walks up and down the Hill have made the the Falls become a special place for me and now my wife, who joined me in Canada from the United States 11 years ago.
So here’s to you Niagara Falls, I look forward to getting to know you better.

Canada’s Newest and Scariest Haunted Attraction Terrorizes at Record Levels
From a Marketwire press release:
Haunt Manor, known as Canada’s scariest authentically haunted Hayride and haunted house is located in Niagara Falls right on Lundy’s Lane. It is site of one of the bloodiest battles in Canada’s history.
Featuring the most state of the art haunted props, Hollywood special effects and make-up that can be found in Canada. With attendance also nearly triple you may want to arrive early. This year Haunt Manor presents its brand new 5000 square foot Haunted House – Crypt of Darkness and their state of the art hayride called Sinister Woods. There are dozens of monsters decked out by a Hollywood make-up artist Robert Prince from Grimsby, Ontario.
Be expecting to see a 12 foot evil tree monster that chants and grabs victims in the woods to a four legged 6 foot tall corn beast and a 30 foot fire ball. This haunted attraction is not recommended for the faint at heart.
“You will get scared. We have worked year-round to bring this off, see it for yourself if you are brave enough!” says owner and creator Phil Van Kleef.

Wallenda making pitch to Canada for tightrope walk
From the Niagara Gazette:
Nik Wallenda’s lifelong dream may be coming closer to reality.
The tightrope walker and his team met with Canadian officials Thursday in continuing efforts to convince that side of the border to allow a wire walk next year above Niagara Falls. Wallenda said he wasn’t expecting anything but a continuation of the dialogue his group has had with elected officials.
“I don’t perceive a 100 percent go-ahead,” he said during a press conference Thursday. “We’re just discussing the next step. But we’ve gotten great support from Mayor Jim Diodati and the other officials”

Spandy Andy on Clifton Hill

Do you know who Spandy Andy is? I didn’t until a few days ago. he is a guy who wears a full body bright spandex suit and dances. He performs on the street, tried out for So You Think You Can Dance Canada, and apparently even has a gig at Marineland. I’m not really a fan of his, but I can certainly appreciate the fact he can dance, and he always seems to have a crowd around him.
When he’s dancing, he usually has someone with him filming, and he also has a camera built-in to his stereo. He then edits the videos and puts them online. To check him out, a good video to get a sense of who he is and what he does is one where he was dancing on Clifton Hill in front of the Niagara SkyWheel at night. You can view it on YouTube or below:

Great Wolf spooks in October
From the Toronto Sun:
By day, the Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls is the ultimate family fun zone and Canada’s largest indoor water park.
But when the sun goes down during Halloween season, the lodge undergoes a transformation and becomes a surreal, spooky setting for a one-of-a-kind Halloween experience.
It’s all part of a “Howl-O-Ween at the Wolf” from Oct. 14 to 31.

Canada’s fling with Marilyn
(this isn’t directly related to Niagara Falls, but there is a blurb about Marilyn Monroe being in Niagara Falls)
From the Niagara Falls Review:
We know her influence in the U.S. but what kind of impression did Marilyn Monroe leave in Canada?
Plenty, according to the man who organized an exhibition in her honour at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, ON. Though she only made two high-profile visits to Canada – including Niagara Falls in 1952 – her stamp on pop culture is still felt through photos and artwork.
The exhibition closed in May, but Finn will be at the RiverBrink Art Museum July 17 to discuss Monroe’s enduring influence up north.
“(Niagara) was her first major acting role, and she was drawing quite a bit of attention,” says Finn, McMichael’s assistant curator. “It seemed like she had a much closer relationship with the people she met on the street than any other time in her career after that.”

Skywalker petitions to cross Niagara Falls
From the Globe and Mail:
Nik Wallenda walked his first tightrope when he was 2.
He’s bicycled 45 metres across a wire suspended 20 storeys high.
He even proposed to his wife on a high wire.
But the famed funambulist’s most hair-raising feat yet may be a political one: persuading g the embattled government agency overseeing Canada’s top tourist attraction to relax a century-old ban on stunts and green-light his life-long dream of walking across Niagara Falls.

Going Our Way: A Canadian detour between Detroit and Washington
From the Washington Post:
A nine-hour drive with three children younger than 7 is not for the fainthearted, but Cathy Buffington and Don Badrak have a plan. The University Park couple, who’ll be driving from Detroit to Washington with their kids next month, want to veer off track for a few days in Ontario as long as they’re up north. High on their wish list: play time and family attractions in Toronto, hiking and parks of all kinds, especially water parks — or at least hotels with awesome pools.
Detouring via Canada will add about four hours to the drive home, but it’s well worth it for the chance to visit two primo family destinations: Toronto and Niagara Falls. Toronto in the summer is a delight, with enough activities to keep the gang busy for a week. And visiting the falls is one of those legendary experiences that the kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Plus they get to wear those cool yellow slickers. The only question: Stay on the Canadian or the U.S. side? More on that burning controversy later.
