An Annie Leibovitz Exhibit With Shots of Niagara Falls, Not Demi Moore
Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz has a new book out with photos of scenery rather than celebrities. I haven’t seen the book, but an article in The Atlantic says that the cover of the book has Niagara Falls on it.
Stopping in front the book’s cover image—a breathtaking vision of Niagara Falls—she explained that this was the picture that led to all the rest. She took in the view on a trip with her children, and watched them stare out at the water, mesmerized. “I stood behind them, they were actually in front of me, and I took this picture. It’s a photograph that anyone can take. It’s an American snapshot,” she said. “Actually, we were in Canada. A Canadian snapshot.”

Canadian officials pressed on Maid of the Mist issue
From the Buffalo News:
New York’s senators urged Canadian officials Thursday to protect the jobs, docking areas and brand name of the Maid of the Mist Co., regardless of whether another tour company is awarded launching rights around Niagara Falls.
In a letter to Canada’s Niagara Parks Commission chairwoman, Janice Thomson, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said that the 150 jobs created by the American Maid of the Mist operation should be preserved and that the Maid of the Mist brand name be maintained.

Travel photo of the day: Colorful Niagara Falls
From the Travel section of the NBC Today Show web site (including photo):
Mary Umbricht of Seekonk, Mass., captured this beautiful photo of Niagara Falls.
Umbricht took the picture on Saturday while spending a long weekend in Canada. There was “a lot of color,” she told TODAY.com, and visibility was great due to no leaves on the trees.

ERNIE’S GOLD: A Prospector’s Tale – by Brian (Chip) Martin
This isn’t exactly about Niagara Falls, but it does relate to Harry Oakes, one of the key historical figures in Niagara Falls.
From RepublicOfMining.com:
In the early 1900s, young Ernie Martin immigrated from Staffordshire, England, to Canada to seek his fortune. He finally ended up in Kirkland Lake, where gold was to be found if you were willing to work at it. Ernie was. And so was Harry Oakes. The two of them became prospecting partners. Ernie and Harry worked hard and non-stop to find a vein of gold so they could start a mine.

Pressure mounts to OK walk across Niagara Falls
From the Toronto Star:
As an aerialist’s bid to tightrope walk across Niagara Falls next summer hangs in the balance, the commission ruling on his proposal is facing pressure to let the event proceed.
Nik Wallenda, a seventh-generation member of the famed tightrope-walking Wallenda family, hopes to fulfill his lifelong dream of walking across the falls on a wire.
The proposal has cleared all legal hurdles on the American side, but authority to approve or reject Wallenda’s idea in Canada rests with the Niagara Parks Commission. Chair Janice Thomson has repeatedly said the walk would be a stunt contrary to the commission’s mandate to preserve the falls’ natural beauty.
Wallenda maintains his balancing act is an art form, not a stunt. He made his case before the commission two weeks ago in a 12-minute presentation. The commission is reviewing the proposal and Thomson said she expects a ruling early next week.

You’ll find a steady stream of family fun at Niagara Falls
From Cleveland.com:
Spectacular natural beauty. Gloriously tacky man-made fun. Niagara Falls is overflowing with both.
We experienced the dual sides of the falls on a long family weekend excursion to Canada to see the holiday lights — and then some. And we loved most of it, especially our 4-year-old. So if you decide to head north for a bit of seasonal sightseeing, here are some of our favorites beyond the bright lights and big falls.

Some Wallenda posts today
I know I’m behind, but I still wanted to post some articles about Nik Wallenda and his attempts to get approval to walk on a wire over Niagara Falls.
The rest of the posts today and at least one tomorrow will be on his recent trip to Niagara Falls Ontario to present to the Niagara Parks Commission.
Wirewalker to make pitch on Falls crossing
From the Niagara Falls Review:
Nik Wallenda is used to wowing people. Now he hopes he’s able to wow the Niagara Parks Commission.
Wallenda will have his chance in two weeks to finally convince Niagara Parks commissioners his proposal to walk on a tightrope across the Horseshoe Falls between Canada and the United States is the work of an experienced and talented performer, not that of a thrill-seeking stuntman.
The Florida wire walker submitted his request online to speak before the commission, a request interim chairwoman Janice Thomson granted for the Nov. 16 meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. at Legends golf course.
“Separately, (Wallenda) sent me a letter with some of the details of how he would propose to do this walk,” said Thomson.

So here’s to you Niagara Falls, I look forward to getting to know you better.
