Cullen miniatures sale approved

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Cullen Miniature Village, which has delighted hundreds of thousands of visitors at its former location in the Durham Region, has found a new home in The Niagara Parks Commission’s (NPC) Botanical Gardens.

Oshawa City Council approved the sale after endorsing a decision made that city’s corporate services committee last week.

“Our Botanical Gardens will be the perfect site for the Miniature Village,” NPC Chair Janice Thomson said. “The village was originally developed for a botanical setting and they were intended to be viewed by audiences of all ages; our Botanical Gardens, with the Butterfly Conservatory right next door, will be the perfect home for this collection”.

Critters invade the Butterfly Conservatory

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The tropical heat of the Butterfly Conservatory played host to some cold-blooded fun over the weekend.

The popular Niagara Parks attraction re-opened to the public Saturday after being closed for renovations.

On the opening day guest list was a menagerie of critters from Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo including a 14-metre-long python, an alligator and a giant snapping turtle.

Kevin Dungey, known as Caiman Kevin to the audience, hosted a series of interactive shows over the holiday weekend aimed at scientific education and animal awareness.

“It’s all hands on and interactive,” he said, while holding an albino reticulated python.

“You just don’t often get a chance to see these animals up close.”

Butterflies set to soar again

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The metamorphosis at the Butterfly Conservatory is almost complete.

The large windows of the Niagara Parks attraction have been washed and the massive netting that keeps the colourful winged inhabitants away from the misting and air-handling units has been replaced.

The verdant habitat of tropical greens has been pruned, rearranged and reestablished.

All that’s missing from the humid rainforest environment are the butterflies.

Behind the Butterfly Conservatory

From the Niagara Falls Review:

More than 400,000 people toured the Butterfly Conservatory last year.

Employees at the facility are used to seeing and hearing people’s positive reactions to the roughly 3,000 winged wonders around them.

But it’s unlikely many of the visitors fully understand the work and effort that goes into keeping one of Niagara Parks’ premiere attractions going.

“Why I love Niagara Falls” winner

So, a week ago I announced a contest in association with ETours.to. Visitors were to submit a reason why they loved Niagara Falls. The plan was for me to post the responses, and then choose a winner. Given the time of year, and the drop off in traffic in the off-season, I figured I’d get a half a dozen entries. Well, I only got one (two, if you could my sister tweeting a one-line answer). I wonder how many people thought about entering, and are kicking themselves for not sending something in :-)

Anyway, the lone entry was provided by Colleen Cole. Here is her response:

I love Niagara Falls because of the water, not just the falls themselves, but the gorge, too is beautiful. Touring through the parks in the area is magical, especially during the fall when the leaves change colour or during the Winter Festival of Lights. I love the Butterfly Conservatory – where else can you go to see such beautiful butterflies? The horse drawn carriage rides, the cotton candy and the fudge are not to be missed. I would be remiss not to mention the dining. If you ever get an opportunity, the buffet at the Sheraton Fallsview is spectacular, both the food and the view – and it is extra special for my fiancé and I, as that is where we dined for the first time with my parents. The wineries, the cheese factories, the artisans and Afternoon Tea at one of the many boutique hotels in Niagara on the Lake also add to the attraction. Why do I love Niagara? For all of this, and more!

Colleen wins a Niagara Falls Tour from Toronto that includes pick-up and return from all locations in Toronto, winery visit with wine tasting, Niagara-on-the-Lake visit, Maid of the Mist (seasonal) or Journey Behind the Falls admission, and free time in Niagara Falls. Congratulations Collen!
