Talks boost development hopes in Falls, but progress still slow
From the Buffalo News:
More than a decade ago, Manhattan real estate billionaire Howard P. Milstein first invested in a company with grand plans to redevelop a huge swath of derelict property in Niagara Falls, and so far there is almost nothing to show for it.

Residents oppose closing of state parks
From the Buffalo News:
State legislators from the Assembly and Senate and from both sides of the political aisle were quick over the weekend to criticize the proposed closing of state parks and historic sites as part of Gov. David A. Paterson’s effort to close an anticipated budget gap of $8.2 billion in the fiscal year beginning April 1.
And ordinary residents who use the parks joined in the criticism.
Paterson’s plan, unveiled Friday, would save $6.5 million by closing 41 parks and 14 historic sites when the new budget year begins April 1. It also would reduce services at 23 other parks, including Niagara Falls State Park, which is widely known around the world and is a magnet that attracts untold numbers of international travelers.
Assemblywoman Francine Del- Monte, the Lewiston Democrat who represents Niagara Falls among many other communities along the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, called upon State Parks Commissioner Carol Ash to explore ways for local municipalities to keep some of the parks open.

A new two-year plan to market tourism in Niagara Falls and Niagara County will focus on targeting 21 types of travelers — from empty nesters to African American church groups — that are seen as the best opportunities for drawing more visitors.
The plan, unveiled Thursday by the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp., builds on new visitor data in an attempt to refocus the way the agency promotes the area.

Brasa Brazilian Steakhouse: Restaurant’s gauchos slice 12 kinds of Brazilian barbecue
From the Buffalo News:
They have an awful lot of roast meat in Brazil. Or so it would seem if you visit Brasa, a traditional, newly opened Brazilian barbecue restaurant called a “churrascaria” in the luxe Hilton Hotel attached to the casino.
You can start training for the 2016 Olympics now.
A churrascaria serves meats cooked on vertical spits called rodizios, gaucho style. And in Brasa, as peppy Brazilian tapes play in the background, gaucho-clad servers move from table to table, stopping at those on which a green disc is displayed.
Then, using magnificent knives, they slice the meat off the rodizios as the diners watch in awe. At Brasa, there are 12 different kinds of meat to choose from, including poultry, beef, pork and lamb.
And should you need to take a rest — an entirely likely occurrence— you turn the disc on your table to red and the gauchos will stay away until you get a second wind or something.

Aquarium of Niagara bubbling up for expansion
From the Buffalo News:
The Aquarium of Niagara is wading toward a major expansion.
Aquarium officials are in the early planning stages of an addition and remodeling project that could double the size of the attraction just outside Niagara Falls State Park.
They plan to submit an application next month for a $5 million state grant for the project and will reach out to regional organizations for support during the coming weeks.
“This is the first step for our future and for the City of Niagara Falls,” said Gay Molnar, director of development. “For us to go for this grant means something very dear to this establishment.”
The Aquarium of Niagara — home to sea lions, penguins and other aquatic creatures — will turn 45 next year.

Falls theater rises again
From the Buffalo News:
An 88-year-old domed theater on Main Street that has survived disco, heavy metal and “Girls Gone Wild” has a new life after a two-year, $1.8 million renovation that restored many of its original features.
The building at 1711 Main St. will reopen this weekend as the Rapids Theatre, after undergoing extensive work to undo decades of decay that set in when it operated as a nightclub and late-night concert venue.
