Sleep Cheap off to rousing start

One of the city’s top fundraising promotions is off to its usual hot start.
Founder Jim Diodati says hotel phone lines were buzzing Monday for the first day of bookings for Sleep Cheap Charities Reap. By Tuesday, five of the 28 properties taking part were sold out.
“The first day there were approximately 1,200 rooms booked,” says Diodati, the two-term city councilor making a bid for the mayor’s seat Monday night.
“It’s up from last year for the number of rooms booked … but we have more rooms (available) this year.”
A few “big players” like the Great Wolf Lodge and Fallsview Casino Resort joined the event this year. Originated by Diodati as a way for local residents to enjoy the city’s amenities while helping out local charities, it has raised more than $700,000 its first five years.

Sleep Cheap bookings open Monday
The Niagara Falls Review still doesn’t have their articles up yet (I’m sure they will shortly), but the St Catharines Standard has one:
The dates are now official: Circle Nov. 15 to 18 on the calendar to Sleep Cheap.
But act quickly to reserve a room because the hotels participating in this year’s Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event fill up quickly.
Hotel rooms will become available for booking starting at 7 a.m. Monday.
“We have a real nice collective mix of properties scattered throughout the city,” said Jim Diodati, the Niagara Falls councillor and mayoral candidate who came up with the idea six years ago and has watched it grow into a huge success.
Over the past five years, Sleep Cheap has raised more than $700,000 for Niagara charities, without any expenses coming out of the event. “We have 28 properties. That includes all the major hotels and all three of the water parks, which is key, especially for the families,” said Diodati.
One new thing this year is that half of the proceeds will go to a charity determined by the individual hotel, and the other half goes to the Sleep Cheap committee to divide among charities that apply for funding. I like that idea.

Online reservation booking becomes increasingly popular

The online booking of tourism reservations continues to grow in popularity, according to the Niagara Tourism&Convention Corp., principal promoter of tourism in Niagara County.
Bookings through the corporation’s Web site ( www.niagara-usa.com ) in June and July amounted to twice as much revenue for local hospitality vendors as did bookings for those same months last year, said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive officer of the corporation. He said 2,547 bookings have been made so far this year through the online reservation system.
