Keeping famed Maid of the Mist captain’s story alive
From the Buffalo News:
On this, the 150th anniversary of the day Bill Evans’ great-great-grandfather surprised people by steering the Maid of the Mist through the wild rapids in the gorge below Niagara Falls, the old captain’s fame has faded.
While Evans is not sure how the man he grew up hearing about at the Sunday dinner table affected his life, he’s proud of the family history that local buffs want to keep alive: the amazing feat by Joel R. Robinson, the man known as the “Hero of the Rapids.”
“He was fearless, in a sense,” Evans, 66, said of his ancestor. “It was just like this Evel Knievel kind of thing. For the money, they were willing to risk their lives to do that for their families. That’s about all I can say. It’s amazing that they got through it.”

From Hennepin to hydro
From the Niagara Falls Review (including a video):
The area around Niagara Falls was to be preserved as “a mecca of peace” for the “millions of overworked and tired humanity” to enjoy, according to John Langmuir, the second chairman of the Niagara Parks Commission.
A century and a quarter after it was created, the parks commission is still meeting that objective, said historian Sherman Zavitz, who quoted Langmuir’s vision during a walking tour of Queen Victoria Park Sunday.
“He thought about that for a while before he wrote those lines,” Zavitz said.
Sunday’s tour was one of the events marking this year’s 125th anniversary of the Niagara Parks Commission’s creation in 1885. Zavitz will lead a second free tour Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., leaving from the parks police station.

Park poised for 125th anniversary
From the Buffalo News:
Dignitaries from around the nation and Canada came to Niagara Falls in 1885 to be a part of history when the governor of New York accepted the Niagara Reservation as a state park.
Organizers hope marching units will come from far and wide to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the park with a parade July 17.

Mary Nichols Photography – Niagara Falls
Someone with a Blogger blog posted about a recent tip to Niagara Falls (including some very nice pictures):
It has now been five years since my husband and I said I DO. It hardly feels possible that it has been that long. It has been a happy love filled journey and I feel so lucky to be head over heals in love with this amazing man, and also getting to spend every day with my best friend. It dosen’t get better than that! For our anniversary we snuck away for the weekend for some much needed rest and relaxing. Life can be downright exhausting at times! We booked a room at Kilpatrick Manor B&B and let me tell you, this place is nothing short of fabulous. We loved everything about it. Our room was luxurious perfection, the house beautiful, and the breakfasts?? Let’s just say Kevin’s amazing cooking turned us into breakfast snobs! If you’re thinking about going to the Falls stay there! You will be so glad you did! Kevin and Nance are spectacular hosts!

FallenPeach, Photography, Graphic Design and Fine Art: Away We Went: Niagara Falls
Someone with a Blogger blog posted about a recent trip to Niagara Falls (along with pictures):
Matt and I just returned from our 2 year anniversary vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada. We had a wonderful time, and walked A LOT. My legs are still sore, but it was worth it. We stayed in two different hotels because we decided to go a day earlier than planned, both were nice. The second hotel room had a view of the falls, but we were only on the 4th floor – so it wasn’t as spectacular as a view as we had expected. However, there was an observatory on the 14th floor, which was cool.
