Lights on falls to show Today Show’s colours Thursday night

From the Niagara Falls Review (the article says tomorrow, but it is actually today/Thursday):

The American Falls will have a morning show feel to them Thursday night.

As part of the Today Show’s 60th anniversary, NBC has arranged to have the show’s familiar red, orange and yellow colours illuminated on both the American and Horseshoe Falls, starting at 5 p.m. Footage will be shown on Friday’s Today Show, wrapping up a week of anniversary celebrations.

“We’re having the Empire State Building lit up here in Manhattan, the Bellagio in Las Vegas, the CIRA Centre in Philadelphia,” says NBC spokeswoman Monica Lee. “We’re glad that everyone’s joining from each area.”

Lee says Niagara Falls was a “natural” choice for producers to tap, and Today Show hosts have been hyping it all week. The colours will be displayed until midnight.

Canada nixes Wallenda’s Niagara rope walk

From UPI:

Canadian officials in Niagara Falls have denied daredevil Nik Wallenda’s application to walk across the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope next summer.

Wednesday night, the Niagara Parks Commission voted to deny a permit for the stunt, planned for June, the Toronto Star reported.

The plan was for Wallenda to cross from Goat Island, which separates the U.S. falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, 1,800 feet across the gorge, on a 2-inch-wide steel cable to the Canadian side.

Parks Commissioner Janice Thomson told the Star there are safety concerns as well as a fear it would spur unauthorized copycat stunts. She said the event also didn’t fit with long-term planning for the park region.

Wallenda won’t give up on falls tightrope dream

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Both Nik Wallenda and the Niagara Parks Commission are digging in their heels.

Wallenda wants to be the first person in more than a century to walk across the Niagara gorge on a tightrope. The Commission seems determined not to let it happen.

The performer was in Niagara Falls Wednesday morning to make his pitch to the Commission’s public meeting. He’s already received approval for the tightrope walk from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and he has the support of Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati. But without the blessing of the Parks Commission and its chair Janice Thomson, the tightrope walk – as Wallenda wants it – can’t happen.

With permission already granted from New York State, Wallenda said the option is there to walk across the American falls. But it’s the international crossing over the Horseshoe Falls he really wants.

However, the Niagara Parks Commission banned stunting over the falls more than a century ago, and hasn’t budged since.

“We can listen to Mr. Wallenda and listen to his proposal, but (the Niagara Parks Act) is the guiding document for us,” said Thomson.

Clifton Hill – “The Most Fun by the Falls!”

A photographer with a Blogger blog posted about a recent trip to Niagara Falls:

After shooting more pictures of both the American Falls and Horseshoes Falls then I would ever need but seemingly unable to stop taking “just one more” shot of the beautifully illuminated falls, I finally convinced myself that enough was enough and pointed my feet in the direction of Clifton Hill for the trek back up to my car which I had parked not too far from the base of Skylon Tower.

He took some fantastic night pictures of Clifton Hill that you should check out.

Setting sail under cloud of uncertainty

From the Buffalo News:

Maid of the Mist workers Tuesday hurriedly prepared for the start of the upcoming tourist season — hoping it won’t be the last on the Canadian side for an iconic tour boat company that traces its roots back 126 years.

The Maid of the Mist Steamboat Corp. has owned exclusive rights from its Canadian docks below the falls since the company began, but Ontario’s tourism minister has ordered the lease on the Canadian side be opened to competitive bidding, in effect putting the long-term future of the company into question.

Charter boats will keep ferrying visitors between the docks at Table Rock and the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe falls, but they may belong to a different company and not be part of the small fleet called the Maid of the Mist.

“Everything is up in the air,” said John H. Percy Jr., president and chief executive of the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. on the U.S. side of the border. “Right now, I’m just looking forward to 2011 season and continuing to work with them.”

EASTER WEEKEND BODES WELL FOR 2011 NIAGARA FALLS TOURISM SEASON

From the Niagara Falls Reporter:

If Easter week is any sort of barometer, the 2011 tourism season is going to be an exceptionally good one for Niagara Falls. Tourists were out en masse, and even the reality of $4-per-gallon gas prices did not keep them from traveling to see the world’s most famous waterfall.

The Hilton Fallsview and Suites in Niagara Falls, Ont., was filled to capacity with guests representing states from all over the union, along with a number of European, South American and Middle Eastern countries.

No one seemed to be clutching their wallets too closely, as they freely spent on sightseeing, attractions, shopping and food. All of this came despite the fact that the area’s top attraction, the Maid of the Mist boat ride, was dry-docked due to unseasonably cold weather that caused a very late release of the Lake Erie ice boom.

The Cave of the Winds and the Journey Behind the Falls operated at diminished capacity. The Cave could only allow visitors a ride to the base of the American Falls, as their famed wooden decks have yet to be rebuilt for the season, while the Journey dealt with falling rock that closed their outside observation decks to visitors in the early part of last week.

With the dawn of another busy and profitable season upon us, it seems the proper time for a primer as to how all local residents can best be prepared to handle and augment the big tourism push that fuels the economy of our city and county.

Nothing frosts the hardworking people in the tourism sector of Niagara Falls, N.Y., more than when they hear tales from tourists that locals seem to go out of their way to send people across the border to Canada.

Media requests flow over falls photos

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It has been more than three decades since Russ Glasson last set eyes upon the mighty cataracts of Niagara.

But during the past week, the iconic tourist attraction has figured prominently in the life of the semi-retired 75-year-old Weatherfield, Conn., resident.

Last year, Glasson posted a small collection of 41-year-old photos showing a dried-up American Falls on a photo-sharing website.

The photos, which were taken by his late father-in-law, eventually caught the attention of a reporter with London’s Daily Mail newspaper, who contacted Glasson to say he was interested in doing a story about the photos and posting the collection on the newspaper’s website.

Links to the story made the rounds on social media web-sites, including Facebook and Twitter, and it wasn’t long before Glasson found himself fielding almost daily interview requests from local and national media outlets.

On Monday, Glasson and the photos made an appearance on CNN during a segment hosted by news anchor Kyra Phillips.

Moses still on meandering detour

From the Buffalo News:

The Robert Moses State Parkway, hailed a half-century ago as a marvel of modern highway engineering that would give millions of motorists a new perspective of the Niagara River and its famous falls, may have become a road to oblivion.

The objective was to provide a fast, efficient and safe way for people to drive rapidly along the river’s edge and enjoy its spectacular views without having to dodge pedestrians or worry about cross-street traffic.

It was a way to open the river’s vistas to drivers and passengers who otherwise may never have been able to find a place to park, and it was free of charge.

The idea of a limited-access, scenic parkway with wide, sweeping curves that wound right through the state park at the brink of the American Falls seemed like an idea whose time had come in the mid-20th century. And it was named in honor of the state’s master builder of the time: Robert Moses.

But a growing chorus of detractors has formed over the last few decades calling for change — and in some cases demolition — of all or some of the parkway, and state officials again are considering what to do about it.
